Amazing Year Ahead!NCCSBlog

Do you hear it? There’s a buzz coming from North Cobb Christian School as the new year begins! We have new, experienced principal leadership in lower and middle school, the largest number of Upper School students that NCCS has ever had, a new after school program for middle school, and new technology in the lower school creating greater interaction between students and parents, just to name some of the reasons for the “buzz.”

To find out more about why our leadership team is so excited about this year, check out our NCCS blog HERE! And be sure to subscribe to the blog to get perspective and insights from our leadership, faculty, staff, and other guest bloggers throughout the year.

AP Scholars at NCCS

Congratulations to the following NCCS Upper School Students who have been recognized as AP Scholars. This is an outstanding recognition in honor of the hard work these students have put forward in multiple Advanced Placement classes. Participation in just one AP course is remarkable, but to excel in multiple courses is definitely a cause for celebration. Please join us in congratulating the following students!

AP Scholar (scores of 3 or better on three or more AP Exams)
Austin Hatch
Chase Truran
Mark Watson

AP Scholar with Honors (scores of 3 or better on 4 or more AP exams and an average of 3.5 on all AP exams taken)
T.J. Anderson
Ansley Davies

AP Scholar with Distinction (scores of 3 or better on 5 or more AP exams and an average of 3.5 on all AP exams taken)

K3-4th Students “Show What They Know”
Using SeesawSeesaw App!

All of our lower school students are now able to share what’s happening in their classes with their parents through an app called Seesaw. Students can “show what they know” on the app, using photos, videos, drawings, text, PDFs, and links. Seesaw gives students a real audience for their work and offers parents a personalized window into their child's learning. As students independently document what they are working on in class, deeper learning and reflection are encouraged. It’s a perfect tool in which the learning process is easily captured, instead of just the end result.

Students can use Seesaw's built-in audio recording and drawing tools to reflect on what they've learned or explain how they got their answer. In turn, they are able to receive an authentic audience of their peers and parents, encouraging better work and real feedback. Through Seesaw teachers can control who can see what, and what feedback options are available. It is private, so only parents see their children’s posts and the whole class posts the teacher puts up. We are excited about the partnership among students, teachers, and families that is already being created through Seesaw and look forward to all of the ways that this new tool will empower our students as they learn.

NCCS Junior Excels in Brown University Summer Program

Congratulations to K.P. Pierre for his excellent work as a participant in the Brown University Biomedical Engineering Pre-college Program this summer. K.P. was one of only 25 students selected from across the United States to participate in this distinguished program hosted at Emory University and the CDC in Atlanta. This program gave K.P. the opportunity to work with and learn from some of the most highly regarded leaders in the fields of Neuroscience, Biotechnology and Epidemiology. K.P. was recognized and received the highest scoring grade in the program with 99%. He also received the Lab Award for his outstanding research and lab work. Outstanding job, K.P.!  (Pictured giving presentation and working at the CDC on a human brain.)

Eagles Discount Card Goes Digital!zurly

We are excited that our Eagles Discount Card is now digital! Our new Eagles Discount App through Zurly not only allows us to be able to offer more deals, but it also makes selling easier and faster for the students. In addition, it eliminates the hassle of carrying cards and handling cash! Each child will have his or her own individual link to share via social media, text or email. Everyone who purchases the app from your student will have the discounts right on their phone and your student will get the credit, either for prizes or for credit towards spring term trips. Zurly will track each student's Eagles Discount App sales and give you a report on your personal donation page as you go. North Cobb Christian School will also have this report and be able to keep track of how much each student has sold.

For complete instructions that show how easy it is to register and share the link with others through your app, please click here.

To see the available deals, you have two options:
1. Download the Zurly app (free) from the App Store. When you open it, it will give you the option to see the NCCS deal pack.
2. If you get a personal link for one of your students, you can click it and see the deals before you purchase the Eagles Discount Pack.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to support@zurly.com or contact Tara Dorsey.

ASPIRE - NEW Middle School After School Program!

NCCS is offering a new program in our Middle School called ASPIRE, which stands for After School Programs I Really Enjoy! The goal for this program is to provide a safe, fun, nurturing environment for middle school students to play, socialize, and learn after the school day has concluded. Middle school students who are not picked up by 3:30pm are encouraged to participate in this program which concludes at 5:30pm. (Students may be picked up any time between 3:30pm-5:30pm.)
ASPIRE is being coordinated by Andrea Dignon, our Middle School French teacher, and other middle school teachers will be involved each day. To register your student, please click here. If you have any questions, please contact Andrea Dignon.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat...

Members of the Class of 2017 went on the traditional NCCS senior rafting trip on the Ocoee River last Friday and had a BLAST! Not only did they love the adventure on the river, but they also enjoyed spending time together discussing the year ahead. One of the highlights of the trip was a special time of sharing one word that they would like to be known for as they finish their time at NCCS. Some of their words included LEADER, COMPASSIONATE, SERVANT, CARING, LOYAL, HUMBLE, SELFLESS, ENCOURAGER, PASSIONATE, CONFIDENT, JOYFUL, LOVING, FAITHFUL, UNWAVERING, and STEADFAST.
We are looking forward to a GREAT year with our seniors leading the way!

NCCS Parking/Carline 101Carline

As each school year begins, families often wonder which parking spaces to use. All parking spaces are available for everyone to use EXCEPT for spaces marked RESERVED, STUDENT, or HANDICAP. Reserved spaces are either purchased at the spring benefit dinner and auction by our families for use the following school year, given to our teachers of the year, or provided for prospective families visiting NCCS Admissions. Student spaces are assigned to our student drivers by number and handicap spaces are prohibited to use by law unless a handicap parking permit has been issued to the driver.
Thank you for refraining from parking in any reserved, student, or handicap spaces.

In addition, you can find complete carline instructions HERE. We would especially like to draw your attention to our NO CELL PHONE rule for the safety of our students!

Calling All Grandparents!

Message about our new Grandparents Club from grandparent leaders Stewart Manley and Herb Johnson:

We are pleased to announce the launch of the North Cobb Christian School Grandparents Club, a service organization formed with the aim of providing a valuable resource and a pool of willing volunteers to help the NCCS faculty and staff and engage the students in a number of ways through personal involvement. Whether you can sign up for a fixed assignment on a regular schedule (such as monitoring the cafeteria at lunch or serving in carline) to helping with short-term needs that arise (such as chaperoning a field trip), we want all of the NCCS grandparents to get involved. Please take a minute to fill out the survey on this link and let us know how you'd like to help. We look forward to serving with you!

Lower School Student Competes in National IkeWebWakeboarding Competition

Isaac Phillips, otherwise known as Ike, has been spotted carrying his wakeboard through the halls of NCCS. Ike, who is six years old and in Mrs. Thaxton’s first-grade class, is currently the youngest competitive cable wakeboarder in the county. Ike started riding at the age of four, started competing at five, and competed in eight cable wakeboarding competitions throughout the Summer at Terminus Wake Park. Ike led the park in the Traditional Beginners division, which concentrates more on consistency in riding and placed second in the Grom division, which is about tricks at any level for kids who are nine and under.

Ike was invited to compete in both divisions in the National Points Chase competition that just took place in early August in Orlando. He competed in the Beginners division at National competition, where he rode against several adults, and immediately advanced to the semi-finals, but did not make the finals. We are so proud of you, Ike!

Upper School Student Attends Republican ThomasTucker1WebConvention

Congratulations to NCCS sophomore Thomas Tucker, who had a very special opportunity to attend the Republican Convention in Cleveland this summer. Thomas regularly attends the Cobb GOP breakfasts and was offered a ticket a few days before the convention started. In an article in the Marietta Daily Journal, Cobb GOP Chair Rose Wing said, “When non-voting age students like Thomas Tucker get involved in the process early, they are better-educated voters when they reach the age of 18,” Wing said. “This will have a lasting impression on him to remain involved in the political process, whether he is an active candidate for office or not.” To read the article, click here. We are so proud of Thomas for his participation in this great experience!

Farewell to the CorbettsCorbettsWeb

It is with sad, yet grateful hearts that we send Mike and Harriette Corbett off and wish them well as they move to Florida. Since arriving at NCCS in 1999, the Corbetts have been a large part of our school’s history. Coach Corbett has been instrumental in expanding the athletic program and has held several positions throughout his time at NCCS, with his passion for cross country and track at the center of his tenure. Harriette, who left for semi-retirement a few years ago, was both Bible teacher and Middle School Dean in her various roles at NCCS. Prior to coming to NCCS, Coach Corbett was Athletic Director at Dade Christian from 1970-1992 and assistant pastor at New Testament Baptist from 1992-1998. Harriette was also at Dade Christian, where the two met. Regarding their departure from NCCS, Todd Clingman, Head of School, remarked, “I have known Coach and Mrs. Corbett since I was in kindergarten and have had the privilege of teaching both of their grown boys. There are no finer Christian examples than Mike and Harriette Corbett! They have invested in the Kingdom of God throughout their careers and I appreciate so much what they have done to help make NCCS what it is today. We will miss them greatly and we wish them well as they move to South Florida where they will be close to their son and grandson.” Please join us in thanking the Corbetts for their years of service, not only to North Cobb Christian School, but also to the mission of Kingdom education. We love you and will miss you, Harriette and Mike!

Special Time of Prayer

The 18th Annual Circle of Prayer was an amazing time as students, parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, pastors, and community guests gathered together for a time of prayer and worship. Hearts were joined as everyone sang, “My God, how great thou art!” Each year this event provides a wonderful opportunity to pause as a community and pray for each other, our school, our administrators, our faculty, and staff, and our community. We are so thankful for God's abundant blessings and provision as His mission is fulfilled at North Cobb Christian School! Lower School Celebrates Summer Readers!

Summer provides a wonderful opportunity to fall in love with reading for pleasure. At the end of every year, our Lower School faculty compiles a list of recommended books and authors from various genres to read over the summer. Reading during the summer months develops stamina and self confidence while opening the door to imagination and creativity. While summer reading is completely voluntary, this year our lower school participants collectively read 367 books! Congratulations to the following students who participated in our Lower School Summer Reading Program:
Benjamin Brink, Kristan Sterling, Ricky Frazier, Hayden Burris, Keeghan Bevars, Lauren Ewell, Ethan Sanders, Claire Smith, Halle Cardon, Tristan Sterling, Jordan Greene, Michael Perry, Carson Burris, Samuel Brink, Annie Merritt, and Jordan Merritt

Creative Learning in 6th Grade!

With middle school creativity in mind, sixth grade teacher Emily Wright recently presented a fun lesson to teach her students about locating and labeling points on a coordinate plane. Students had a blast playing “Battle Graph” - a takeoff of the game Battleship - and there were smiles all around as they practiced their graphing skills.

This is a great way for dads to spend quality time with their child(ren) in their context and on their “turf.” All Pro Dad was started in 1997 by Tony Dungy, former head coach of the 2006 Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts. Today, the program is in more than 1,300 schools throughout the country. The breakfasts are held the second Friday of the month beginning at 7:00am in the NCCS Gym and the cost is $5 per person for a Chick-fil-A chicken biscuit, fruit and a drink. To register for the All Pro Dad breakfast on September 9, click here. If you have any questions, please email Nathan Wright or Bryce Dryden. (brycedryden@yahoo.com)

NCCS Junior Cierra Cordak Participates in Summer Program at Boston UniversityCierra

NCCS Junior Cierra Cordak spent a month this summer attending the Academy of Media Production at Boston University. The program allowed her to complete 150 hours of study in film and television production, leading to incredible opportunities to direct her own short film and then to direct a live musical performance in the Boston University TV studio! In addition to these classes, Cierra built relationships with Boston University alumni who are now working in the film and TV industry, as well as met with people who have shows produced by 21st Century Fox. Cierra was grateful for the opportunity to make valuable industry connections with the Boston University professors. She says, "This opportunity was an invaluable experience that gave me a real taste of college life that will help me in my college search this year. It provided me with direction and clarity for my future, as well as the skills that I will need for a media production major and career. Hands down it was the best summer I have ever had!"

Get Involved!

Be a Hero for Zero

Our PTF (Parent Teacher Fellowship) is working hard to ensure our school earns the most money possible through various programs that make it easy for families to help NCCS by following their normal shopping routines! Many generous corporations make it easy to help you be generous to NCCS at their expense through their indirect giving programs. By taking a few simple steps, you can be a HERO for NCCS and it will cost you ZERO EXTRA DOLLARS. It's as easy as scanning a partner card, mentioning NCCS when you shop, or clipping a Box Top from grocery items you are already buying. Click here for a list of businesses/companies, like Amazon, Publix, and Kroger, that offer these programs and get started today - and encourage family and friends to participate as well!

Be sure to "Like" the NCCS PTF Facebook page for PTF information throughout the year and for ways to volunteer.

Calling All Grandparents!

Message about our new Grandparents Club from grandparent leaders Stewart Manley and Herb Johnson:

We are pleased to announce the launch of the North Cobb Christian School Grandparents Club, a service organization formed with the aim of providing a valuable resource and a pool of willing volunteers to help the NCCS faculty and staff and engage the students in numerous ways through personal involvement. Whether you can sign up for a fixed assignment on a regular schedule (such as monitoring the cafeteria at lunch or serving in carline) to helping with short-term needs that arise (like chaperoning a field trip), we want all of the NCCS grandparents to get involved. Please take a minute to fill out the survey on this link and let us know how you'd like to help. We look forward to serving with you!

AllInWeb

A few FAQ's about the Eagles Annual Fund:

Q. Why is everyone talking about the Eagles Annual Fund and being “All In” right now?

A. Because for the month of September, the Eagles Annual Fund is what it’s all about! With both 10-day and 23-day challenges during September, your family is being encouraged to participate - and to participate early!

Q. What does it mean for my kid(s) when I give?

A. Your kid(s) could win TWO prizes! First, there is the September Parent Challenge. The lower school class in each grade, middle school homeroom in each grade, or upper school advisory group in each grade with the highest percentage of parent participation by fall break (September 23) will win a prize. In addition, there’s the all in in 10. ANY of those groups that reach 100% by September 10 will get a prize for reaching that goal AND the September Challenge prize. Most importantly, it enriches all of our programs and helps take North Cobb Christian School from a great school to an excellent school.

Q. I want to participate in the Annual Fund during the month of September, but I don’t have the money to give right now. What are my options?

A. Good News - PLEDGES COUNT as participation! You can fill out the form for a pledge HERE or fill out the participation form that came in the mail with your letter and indicate that you would like to give a pledge. You can choose to pay the pledge off throughout the school year, or pay it off in one lump sum later in the year. Either way, the pledge will count for participation in the Parent Challenge!

Q. I want to give, but what’s the best way for me to do that?

A. Give OR pledge online HERE
Stop by the Development Office and drop off a check or cash OR fill out a participation form to submit your pledge

Want to know more about the Eagles Annual Fund? Click HERE to read more or contact Tara Dorsey in the NCCS Development Office. And plan to be All In during the Eagles Annual Fund Parent Challenge during CanyonSeptember!

Welcome to the Family!

Congratulations to Bethany and Hunter Poplin on the birth of their son, Canyon Hunter Poplin, born August 31st! (Bethany is our Middle School Counselor and Hunter is our Assistant Student Life Director.)
Please join us in welcoming sweet Canyon to the NCCS family!

Second Grade Visits Fire Safety Village

Second grade students stopped by Sparky's house on Wednesday, August 31, when they visited the Fire Safety Village in Marietta! Students learned from real police and firefighters about how to stop, drop, and roll, what to do if a stranger approaches you, how to tell an adult if a gun is found, and much more! Students applied what they learned as they climbed out a window using a ladder, called 911 to report an emergency, and practiced bike safety as they zoomed around the cul de sac! Students also discussed bus and train safety, how to identify people who can help during an emergency, and they watched a puppet show reinforcing all the important skills taught that day. Second graders ended the day with a hug from Sparky! Students loved meeting real police and firefighters - their hard work as our leaders in public safety is very appreciated!

Help Our Students Serve Others -
Parents Needed for Special Projects

NCCS Lower School students are learning about Love in September, and what better way to show love than to serve others! During chapel on September 20, K5-4th graders will be wrapping silverware for Must Ministries and our K3-K4 students will be coloring hearts for Teddy Bears to be handed out to children by Police Officers and Firefighters during times of distress. We are looking for at least 10 parents with hearts for others to help with these projects! We will be wrapping silverware from 8:10am - 8:45am in the gym and then helping with the teddy bears in our preschool classrooms around 9:00am. As a special parent helper, you are welcome to help with one or both sessions. Please email Denise Meier at ciscelmeier@aol.com if you are interested in this awesome service opportunity!

Clip, Clip, Clip for NCCS!BoxTopReps

Box Tops for Education is a school earnings program that helps schools earn cash to buy the things they need. We had a great time kicking off this program in chapel this week and our representatives are excited to get started in your child’s classroom!

Box Tops are each worth 10¢ for schools and are found on hundreds of products. When students, families, schools and communities work together to collect Box Tops, the money adds up fast. Last year, our school earned over $4,000, which we used to help purchase easels for each lower school classroom. We can earn even more cash this school year with your help. Our goal this year is $6,000!

BoxTopsWebTop contributors will win prizes and brag tags and the class that brings in the most for our first collection on September 20th, will even get to throw pies in Mrs. Titus’ face! Start clipping now - and invite family members and friends to clip as well!

NCCS Students Selected for Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra

Over last year's spring semester, along with preparing for spring concerts, preparing for exams and final tests, and just looking forward to summer, some students were busy preparing for auditions for the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra (GYSO) as well! GYSO was founded in 2006 and is the largest youth orchestra program in the southeast, encompassing four orchestras, a jazz ensemble and a percussion ensemble. Gifted and talented elementary through high school age musicians from across the state are selected through competitive auditions.

Congratulations to the following North Cobb Christian School students who auditioned and captured a seat in one of four prestigious orchestras:

MS 5th Grade Orchestra - Owen Siller - Sinfonia
MS 6th Grade Orchestra - Lindsay Nichols - Camerata
MS 8th Grade Band - Tyler Nichols - Camerata
MS Chorus - Chichi Enyinda - Camerata
US Concert Orchestra - Hallie Meier - Philharmonia
US Concert Orchestra - Sarah Sprouse - Philharmonia
US Concert Band - Kayla Constantine - Symphony

These students will rehearse weekly in their orchestras throughout the school year and perform three concerts at the Bailey Performance Center at Kennesaw State University. The three-concert series demonstrates the growing talents of the orchestra, which typically plays to standing room only crowds. The concerts are open to the public and these students would love to have you come and listen! Sunday, October 23, 2016 will be the first concert - get your tickets early.

NCCS String Quartet Plays for Special EventsOrchestra2

Upper School students Sarah Sprouse, Hallie Meier, Molly Dennis and Caitlin Barra volunteered their time to serenade guests at the first ever Harvest Dinner at the 1845 William Root House Museum and Garden in Marietta this past Friday evening. The William Root House is part of the Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society. What a great opportunity to get outside the walls of NCCS to share the amazing gift of music! It was a wonderful evening and this string quartet played beautifully as the guests mingled and shared conversation.

Prior to this event, we were pleased to have the quartet play for the Pastors’ Breakfast held before our Circle of Prayer last week. After the completion of both events, the quartet is already looking forward to their next music “gig!”

All In in 10 - Ends This Saturday!

We are quickly approaching September 10, and therefore the ALL IN in 10 deadline. ANY Upper School advisory group, Middle School homeroom, or Lower School class that reaches 100% by September 10 will receive a group-wide prize. So, yes, there could be multiple classes or groups in each grade that receive this prize! If you are thinking you won’t have time to give before then, don’t worry, we’re going to make it easy for you by throwing an...

Annual Fund Car Line Party!

Yes, that’s right, the much-anticipated 2nd Annual Car Line Party is back!

When: Friday, September 9

Where: Both the morning and afternoon carlines - and throughout the day!

What we’re celebrating: September 10 is our ALL IN in 10 deadline for Annual Fund - and your participation by the 10th could help win your kid(s) prizes (so really...the party continues for days!) Pray, talk to your spouse, and decide on the amount you would like to give/pledge between now and Friday, and then bring it with you. You can either stop by the party tent or pass your gift/pledge out the window to one of our parent volunteers.

Just a couple of things to keep in mind:
We will only be taking checks, cash, or pledges - no pocket change, please.
If you give cash, you will need to turn in a participation form with it. (We will have forms available, or you can download one HERE and print it.)

We can’t wait to see you there! If you’d like to go ahead and make your pledge or donation, click here.

Moving Forward Program Building
RibbonMFPRibbonCutting2Web Cutting Ceremony

A ribbon cutting for the Dr. Carolyn Ware Moving Forward Program Building was held last Thursday, September 1. Dr. Ware, Helen Boen, faculty, staff, and parents attended the official ceremony, with Mr. Clingman sharing about the importance and potential of the Moving Forward Program (MFP) at NCCS and in the community. The MFP is designed to support NCCS students with learning differences that have average to above average intelligence by helping them improve their academic achievement, social skills, and cognitive abilities. NCCS anticipates that the effectiveness of the Moving Forward Program will continue to increase as more services are added to the opportunities already offered. The program is unique in its offerings and its comprehensive reach of students and their needs and it is one of the many ways NCCS strives to serve its student body more effectively to prepare them for success.

The Timothy Program - Starting Soon

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
Proverbs 27:17

Timothy Program Defined:
“The goal of the Timothy Program is to allow North Cobb Christian School students to use their God-given talents and abilities to impact others (neighbors) through mentoring, tutoring and encouraging a fellow student.”

The Student Life and Counseling departments are excited to announce that we are now beginning the process of gathering mentor and mentee applications. The Timothy Program was established two years ago and has created long-lasting relationships that provide encouragement and support to both mentees and mentors. To view a video made during the 2015-2016 school year about the Timothy program, click here.

Upper school students had the opportunity to attend an interest meeting this week to find out more about being mentors. If you think your child would be a good candidate to be a mentee and would benefit from having a mentor, please fill out the application by September 21 at 8:00am.

There is no fee to participate in the program. We will do our best to make suitable matches for as many students as possible, but cannot guarantee all will receive a match as we wish to steward this program well. A Reveal Breakfast will be scheduled to announce matches of mentors and mentees October 12.

We Want to Hear From You!

We greatly value our partnerships with our families and would appreciate you taking a few minutes to complete the school survey e-mailed earlier this week. Your input is valuable and will help to ensure the future success of our programs and mission. Thank you in advance for completing this survey before Monday, September 19.

Fall Play Auditions Next Week for Middle & Upper School Students

NCCS Fine Arts are proud to announce auditions for our fall production, "Our Town," written by Thornton Wilder. Described by Edward Albee as "...the greatest American play ever written," the story follows the small town of Grover's Corners through three acts: "Daily Life," "Love and Marriage," and "Death and Eternity." Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets, audiences follow the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually—in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre—die.

There are roles for seventeen males and seven females with limited flexibility and casting will be open to all students in Middle and Upper School. There is a $100 production fee per cast member associated with this show, which will cover all meals during production week, a cast and crew t-shirt (approved for Friday wear), and two comped tickets to one evening's production; as well as assisting with general production costs to include costuming, set pieces, and props.

Auditions will be held in the Fine Arts Building on Wednesday (9/14) and Thursday (9/15) from 3:30PM - 5:30PM. Students should stay for the entire time, but it is not required that they be present for both days. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script, nothing needs to be prepared beforehand other than character research should your student be so inclined. Performances will be November 10, 11, & 12 and a rehearsal schedule will be provided at auditions.

Please click here to fill out the Google form needed prior to the audition. There is also a field for you to include any additional comments you wish to make.

The NCCS Fine Arts program wishes to provide students every opportunity to explore the gifts that God has given them and as we seek to offer Him more and more worship through our talents! If you have any questions, please contact Matthew Hendrix.

Patience is Rewarded

We wrapped up our first "Fruit Focus" in Lower School this week by honoring one student from each class, K4 - 4th grade. Students were recognized for demonstrating the quality of PATIENCE as they demonstrated being able to wait without complaining in their classrooms. (First - Fourth grade students voted on a fellow classmate they observed demonstrating this Fruit of the Spirit consistently.)

Congratulations to Austin Walsh, Caitlyn Darwin, Tyson Matta, Brayden Harbin, Ashley Blair, Emma Collins, Fisher Hubbs, Regan Hughes, Claire, Go, Samuel Brink, Cayden Wiley, Walker Phillips, Asher Michel, Jude Hamilton, Olivia Stratton.

This group will enjoy a special breakfast together next week.

friendlyreminder

While we are huge dog lovers at NCCS, we would like to remind everyone that due to the possibility of allergies, possible fear from our younger students, and overall safety and healthiness in the NCCS environment, all dogs must remain inside of cars during carline. Please make sure your dog cannot escape from your car during carline and refrain from bringing dogs in the building or around the students waiting to be picked up. Thank you for your help with this!

Get SHREKed!Shrek

NCCS Fine Arts are proud to present SHREK: The Musical. Adapted from the Dreamwork's classic movie, the show follows Shrek as he leaves his swamp on a quest to rescue the beautiful princess Fiona. Bawdy but beautiful, this fractured fairy tale is a command performance that puts love, life, and loathing under the microscope.

What it means to be unique. What it means to be created...and then rejected. What it means to be loved in spite of it all. Come and see why it is indeed a big bright beautiful world!

A wee word of warning, though...the protagonist of the show is an ogre with a disposition to match who is surrounded by a slew of disgruntled fairy tale squatters; all of which are after a Freudian small person who is, in fact, chasing a neurotic princess. While it is a fairy tale, it would do us all well to remember that the movie was rated "PG" and not "G."

Performances:
March 17th at 7:00pm
March 18th at 7:00pm
March 19th at 2:00pm
March 19th at 7:00pm

Tickets go on sale Monday, 3/7 and are available in the Eagles' Nest School Store for $15. Seating is limited.

Special “Shrek-Fast” Breakfast!

Join us for a Shrek-Fast breakfast on Wednesday, March 16 from 7:30am - 8:45am. The event will include photos with the characters from the play (Shrek, Fiona and Donkey), a waffle breakfast and a special sneak peek performance of the NCCS production of Shrek. This event will be a blast and is a great way to spend your Take One Wednesday morning! Please sign up here to reserve your spot for the morning. The Shrek-Fast breakfast is $10 per person. Payment will be collected at the door, but please be sure to sign up!

2016 Middle School GMEA Honor Orchestra

Congratulations to the following Middle School Orchestra students who were a part of the 2016 Middle School GMEA Honor MSHonorOrchestraWebOrchestra event this past weekend: Hallie Meier, Kelly Ann Sutterfield, and Aidan Durity (pictured with Debbie Brink, NCCS Orchestra Director.) These students auditioned in January with over 330 other Cobb County orchestra students for a spot in one of two orchestras made up of the best string students in our District 12, Cobb County schools. Hallie, Aidan, and Kelly Ann made it and represented NCCS so well! They were under the overall direction of David Eccles from Vandercook College in Chicago, IL, and Nathaniel Parker from Kennesaw State University and were a part of sectionals directed by the top chairs of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Both orchestras played amazing concerts Saturday afternoon in the McEachern High School Performance Hall - way to go, Hallie, Aidan, and Kelly Ann!

2016 GMEA All State ChorusAllStateChorusWeb

Congratulations to senior Ethan Thomas, junior Austin Geter, and freshman Eli Thomas for being selected to the 2016 Georgia Music Educators Association All State Chorus. To be selected for this honor, these students must pass two challenging auditions, competing with students across the state from single A through 6A schools. The culmination of their hard work was this past weekend at the Classic Center in Athens, GA, as these students rehearsed and performed with 200 of Georgia’s top high school choral vocalists in each of the choruses under the direction of top conductors from across the country. Congratulations to each of Ethan, Eli and Austin for this high honor!

NCCS Junior Attending US Naval Academy Summer SeminarTreyCollinsWeb

Please join us in congratulating junior Trey Collins for being selected to attend the United State Naval Academy Summer Seminar this summer. This seminar is offered to students who are high achievers and have just completed their junior year in high school. Students participating in this seminar learn about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics, and professional training play equally important roles in developing our nation's leaders. Selection to this seminar is highly competitive and students who are chosen have superior high school performance, demonstrate achievement in athletics and extracurricular activities, and display leadership potential and high character. We are proud of Trey for this accomplishment!

4th Grade Band & Orchestra Attends Atlanta 4thOrchestraFieldTripWebSymphony Concert

Music...you hear it everywhere! Music fills our days and nights! The theme of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra concert that our 4th grade band and orchestra students recently attended was called "Music with a Purpose," and it encouraged our students to listen to the way music touches the world we live in - and to the many ways we make music. What an exciting time it was for our students to sit in a beautiful performance hall and listen to the amazing Atlanta Symphony Orchestra! The students and directors loved the concert and especially loved closing out the day with lunch at the Town Center Varsity!

Healthcare Sciences Class Visits
Local LaceyFieldTripWebPharmacy

On Friday, February 26, the Intro to Healthcare Sciences class paid a visit to a local Acworth institution, Lacey Drugs, and were hosted by David Gamandanis, a NCCS parent and pharmacist who worked there for many years. Lacey Drugs was founded in 1895 and is considered to be the oldest continuously operating pharmacy in Cobb County and possibly the oldest in Georgia. It is also one of a few pharmacies that does custom compounding of prescriptions on site. The students were able to get a behind-the-scenes tour of retail pharmacy operations where they observed the pharmacists mixing medications in the compounding lab and see the tremendous importance of math and chemistry as they explored this career. Many thanks to both Mr. Gamandanis and Lacey Drugs for this opportunity!

Celebrating Art and Creativity by Jan Heflin, NCCS Lower School Art Teacher

JanHeflinDo you remember your first art experience? I remember lying on the kitchen floor (as a two or three year old) and drawing on brown grocery bags with crayons. Watching my mother draw pictures for my sister and me of a simple stick figure with curly hair that we called “Sally” inspired me. “Sally” had a house that sat on top of a hill that my mother created for her. I thought that was the most wonderful drawing I had ever seen and I wanted to be able to draw just like my mom. And when she took the time to show me how she drew “Sally”, I could draw her as well. To her I am sure they were just doodles, but to us those doodles had a name and a story which led us both to love art. Boxes of new crayons, play dough, paint by number sets, those brown LePage bottles of glue (the ones with the rubber tip you had to press to get the glue out) and brown paper bags, of course, all remind me of my first art experiences.

As a mom, I also tried to instill the love art in my own children. I tried to make sure that they had a variety of supplies with which to work that would help foster their own creativity. I had the privilege of being their art teacher at home as well as at school and their artwork always graced the front of our refrigerator, sometimes making it into a frame on the wall. My son’s burlap and yarn penguin that he made in elementary school still hangs on my refrigerator. It makes me smile. My daughter’s acrylic and watercolor paintings she made in fourth grade and college hang on my walls. Her personality shines through both of these. Their pottery is stilled displayed on bookshelves. Having the freedom to express their ideas and feelings through their artwork along with exposure to artists and artworks through visits to a variety of art museums (I believe) has helped them gain an appreciation of the arts and has helped shape the adults they are today.

March is Youth Art Month –a whole month dedicated to the creation and celebration of art! Administered by the Council for Art Education, Y.A.M. has been nationally recognized as a time to promote awareness and advocacy for art in our schools and excellent art education for our youth since 1961. The arts are everywhere and today’s youth are our future artists and designers! How can you help your child celebrate Youth Art Month? Here are a few ideas:

- Encourage your child’s creativity by displaying their artwork at home or at work.

- Foster a creative atmosphere by providing resources such as free-time, art materials and a place where he/she can create.

- Turn found materials (brown grocery bags, cardboard, scrap paper, yarn, buttons, noodles, etc.) into works of art.

- Make your own paint or play dough.

- Talk about your favorite artists and share your passion for the arts.

- Ask questions and talk to them about their art.

- Draw with them.

- Visit a local art museum/gallery.

- Encourage them to participate in this year’s NCCS Youth Art Month Drawing Challenge.

“Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.”
- Albert Einstein

SHINE 2016

Our Lower School showed up in a big way this year as they raised money to go towards the Upper School Spring Term mission trips! This year’s SHINE money will be used to purchase water filters for homes in Haiti so that families can have clean water, to paint and re-roof houses in Haiti, to put on Vacation Bible Schools in different Haitian neighborhoods, and to help with various projects in Guatemala. Together, the Lower School classes raised over $2030.60 for these projects! Every class did their part, with Mrs. Crowe's K4 class leading the way with $532.45, followed by Mrs. Allen's 3rd grade class with $262.61! We could not be more proud of these students and the great job they have done "shining their light" for all to see, and we can't wait to give an update on our projects in our "afterSHINE Chapel" in April!

In addition to supporting our Upper School Spring Term financially, all of our Lower School students are also supporting the various teams through prayer. Lower School parents can see the Prayer Partner list below to join your students in praying for specific teams. Being able to partner in prayer means so much to both our lower and upper school students!

A Drop in the Right Direction4thGradeWaterProject1Web

When fourth grade students learned that their Upper School Spring Term partners were helping provide clean drinking water as part of their mission trip, they wanted to know more. To help the lower school students better understand the importance of clean drinking water, the fourth grade teachers created a Clean Water Simulation. With the roll of a dice, simulated wells were polluted with common toxins such as mosquito eggs or pesticides. At the end of the simulation, one last dice roll determined which wells received a water filter and so they were able to have clean drinking water. The students learned that wells are easily polluted and that water filters were not made available to everyone. As a result, our fourth graders decided that they wanted to help provide at least one water filter to a needy village. They decided to create necklaces and bracelets made of black cord with one bright blue bead 4thGradeWaterProjectWebrepresenting one drop of clean water and sell it to the Upper School students. We are very proud to announce that the jewelry sold out in less than 30 minutes and raised $106! The money raised will go toward the purchase of water filters for people in Haiti and around the world. Thank you to all the Upper School students and faculty who supported this effort!

R.I.S.E. Experience at the High Museum

R.I.S.E. students enjoyed a day of art at the High Museum of Art as a culminating activity to their recent unit on art appreciation. Students were equipped with a wealth of knowledge about elements, styles, and principles of art during the unit, so this allowed them to have a true appreciation for the art that was on display at the museum. While at the High Museum, students were given the opportunity to try their own hand at creating an art masterpiece. They participated in a hands-on art workshop where they were encouraged to use common materials in new ways. R.I.S.E. students had a great day immersed in the wonderful world of art!

SHRank you, all!ShrekWeb

On behalf of all of us involved, I wanted to thank the NCCS community for your support of SHREK: The Musical. Not only did we sell out all four performances, but when we opened up additional seats at the final three performances, we sold those out as well! That kind of response certainly goes a long way towards making all the hard work seem a little easier. And while I recognize that this level of response may not be the norm, I did want to acknowledge it and let you, our audience, know that we are all humbled and deeply encouraged by the turnout this past weekend.
Thank you, truly.
God bless us, everyone!

NHS Blood Drive Collects 108 Pints of Blood!

A heartfelt thank you to all of our blood donors who helped make the National Honor Society Blood Drive a huge success! We appreciate your cheerful attitudes and your commitment to such a worthy cause. We are especially proud of the number of students who selflessly gave blood, many of them for the first time. The Red Cross considers a drive successful if they are able to collect 50 pints, so our 108 pints made for an extremely successful drive! Well done, NCCS! Way to love your neighbors!

Special Chapel GuestRheinscheldChapelWeb

On Tuesday, March 22, Mrs. Rheinscheld's second grade class had the privilege of leading first through fourth graders in chapel. They told the story of Betsy the Butterfly, a young butterfly who looked into the water and only saw her reflection as plain, but learned that when God looks at her, He sees Betsy as beautiful! Afterwards, students were blessed to hear from Miss Anitha Kobusingye from Rwanda, Africa. Anitha is the author of Born Anonymous, a compelling true story of growing up on the streets of Rwanda. As a very young child, Anitha was forced to survive hunger, abuse, anger, and hatred. Through her acceptance of the saving grace of Jesus Christ, her painful orphan existence was turned into a victorious life! Anitha has a passion to share her story of hope, perseverance, and the Truth of how we are made righteous in Christ to young children.

Fair Trade

The second grade classes have been studying about goods and services during our social studies unit on "Working Together." One of our lessons involved an understanding of bartering and trading. There were definitely some good trades and the students loved their trade results!

Spring Term 2016

This year’s Spring Term experiences were filled with opportunities for our students to explore the world outside of the normal classroom setting. Students replaced a roof on a home in Appalachia, explored the history of Savannah and Charleston, went scuba diving at Devil’s Den, worked at the Montreal Mission food bank, handed out meals to the homeless under bridges in Atlanta, distributed water filters to the people of Haiti, and much more. Above all, our students and teachers were able to form and strengthen relationships with each other and deepen their knowledge of the world that God created. And the memories that were created will last a lifetime! Be sure to read the Spring Term blog to learn all about the inspiring, exciting and heart-warming stories experienced by each team! We are especially grateful for our teachers who led our Spring Term teams, sharing their hearts and time so generously!

Terra Nova Testing - Next Week

As a reminder, Terra Nova-3 Achievement Testing for students in grades K5-11 will take place during the week of April 18. This testing is not something for which students should study; however, the test will assess their progress on grade level objectives covered throughout the year. In order for students to be as prepared as possible, please make sure they receive good rest each night before testing, eat a healthy breakfast, bring healthy snacks (not sugary), and bring 2 sharpened No. 2 pencils.

Please note the following about the test schedule:
Grades K5-4 will test the entire week.
Grades 5 & 7 will test Monday through Thursday.
Grades 6 & 8 will test Monday through Wednesday.
Grades 9-11 will test Monday and Tuesday.
Grades 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 will also take a cognitive skills test.

*Special Upper School Notes -
9th-11th grade testing will take place from 8:00am - 12:15pm, with a modified Blue/White schedule for all classes after testing. (Monday - White Day classes/Tuesday - Blue Day classes).
Seniors will not be testing; however, there will be a Senior Celebration Brunch and mandatory senior meeting about graduation on Tuesday, April 19, at 9:30am in the FAB. They will join regularly scheduled classes Monday and Tuesday afternoon as well.

Senior Celebration Brunch/Graduation Meeting

On Tuesday, April 19, we will have a Senior Celebration Brunch at 9:30am in the Fine Arts Building! This is a required senior class event (for students only) during which we will share a delicious breakfast, take care of many details for graduation, deliver caps and gowns to our seniors, and take some fun class pictures. (These photos will be shared electronically for parents to have available for keepsakes.) All seniors should wear jeans with a shirt representing the college they will attend. It will be awesome to celebrate how "one great school leads to another!" Please contact Patti White in the Upper School office if you have any questions. The Brunch and Meeting will end in time for students to begin their Blue 1 classes at 12:25pm when the rest of the Upper School finishes Terra Nova Testing for that day.YouthArtMonthWeb

Regarding his new position at NCCS, Coach Sorg says, "It is an honor and a blessing to have been selected as NCCS' next head football coach! My wife Cassie and my three children, Lana, Lola, and Rocco, are privileged to be welcomed to the NCCS school community! We are prayerful that our family will create a positive legacy at NCCS. Special Library Project to Honor
John-Michael Ritchey

Have you seen the large blue shipping container at the Fine Arts Building? Do you want to help us turn that shipping container into a library that can be shipped to Haiti so that a village in Haiti will know that “God offers us a better story”?  In order to honor the life of our dear friend and beloved teacher John-Michael Ritchey, our Upper School Student Government has partnered with Torch of Hope in order to present our Chick-fil-A IMPACT Project for the Spring of 2016.

We will be hosting workdays over the next few weeks to convert this shipping container into a library that will house books to help teach English to Haitians. It will also be a place where they can come and learn and grow as a part of the greater school community in Haiti. The container will be shipped this summer to a Christian school in Haiti where it is highly anticipated and much needed.

The NCCS National Junior Honor Society is currently having a book drive to help us collect books for the library. New and gently used books for all ages are welcome. Do you have 3 copies of Brown Bear, Brown Bear? That would be a great book for beginning English language learners! In the coming weeks, you will learn more about school supplies that are also needed and we will post any information about the workdays on social media and in E-news so our families can come and help. There are plenty of opportunities for students, parents, faculty and staff, families, and alumni to help with this awesome project. Feel free to include your neighbors in our workdays as a way to get the community involved!

Our most immediate need is for people with construction skills in the following areas:
Framing
Carpentry (for bookcases)
Drywall
Electrical
Tile Installation
If you have expertise in any of these areas and would be willing to volunteer some of your time, please contact Suzanne Perrin, Project Lead. (sperrin5@me.com)

The goal is to have this project wrapped up the first part of May. Many hands make light work! Thank you in advance for sharing your time, talent, and treasure to help this project make a huge difference for the sake of the gospel in Haiti and in honor of Mr. Ritchey.

US Concert Orchestra & Band Travel to
Georgia College and State University

On Tuesday, April 19, the Upper School Concert Orchestra and Band students traveled to Georgia College GCSUVisitWeband State University in Milledgeville. Students were met by an amazing student ambassador, a college representative and one of our own NCCS alumni - Maddie Mobley (Class of 2015). This team took our students on a wonderful tour of their beautiful and stately campus, going from the college entrance, to rock emblem in the ground at the center of campus, to the Music Building, and to the Maxwell Student Union where they had a delicious dinner. After dinner they were able to spend time with the director and sit in on the final rehearsal and the GCSU Orchestra playing their spring concert, The String Classics, with Maddie Mobley in the first violin section! Also on the concert program was the string quartet, Kazanetti String Quartet. One of the interesting things that the students learned about GCSU is that they could join the orchestra whether or not they were planning to pursue a music degree so that their passion for music could continue into college. Everyone felt blessed to be able to spend some time with two of our awesome band and orchestra alumni, Maddie Mobley and Theo Peykoff, who are both loving their college experience at GCSU!

The Heart of Gratitude

NCCS Blog

The Heart of Gratitude
by Karen Rainwater, NCCS Parent and Guest Blogger

One of my girls’ favorite videos was Veggie Tale’s “Madame Blueberry: A Lesson in Thankfulness.” In this video Madame Blueberry thinks she has to fill her house with all kinds of items from “Stuff Mart” in order to be happy. After her house crumbles from the weight of her “stuff” she meets a little boy who has very little, but is happy and content. I’m sure you know the rest of the story. It actually played so much at our house that I can still hear the song “a thankful heart is a happy heart!...”

One of the first things we begin teaching our young children is to say “please” and RainwaterFamily“thank you” at all times. I so endeavored to teach our girls good manners that before they even had a moment to think, I was in their face saying “What do you say?” “What do you say?” I remember a few times when they would suddenly decide they didn’t want to speak. I would become even more adamant to make them say the "magic words", which resulted in a war of wills, my contorted face and gritted teeth... “I SAID, say thank you!” It’s funny looking back now that they are older - I’m not sure my approach to cultivating thankfulness was anything more than a well-intended effort at behavior management. Don’t get me wrong, manners are super important, but lately I’ve been pondering what really cultivates a genuine attitude of gratefulness in my teenage children (and in us as parents). Teaching them to say “thank you” has its place in early parenting, but as they grow up, we want them to truly live in a place of appreciation and gratitude, not just going through the motions of a learned response.

Let’s face it, haven’t we all just longed to feel appreciated by our kids, like even just once? I, like so many other moms, spend my days running my girls here and there, working to provide for their education and their sports, and simply being FLEXIBLE to every whim they text me with! I have tried the pity party, tried the guilt, and I have used the same cliches you have referring to underprivileged kids in other countries. News flash! It isn’t working...

Matthew 12:34 reminds us “for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” While I would love to manage my girls' attitudes with some kind of remote control...it all starts in the heart. I believe God showed me two specific enemies we battle in our culture today that hinder having heart of gratitude. These enemies are performance and entitlement. Let me clarify when I talk about “performance.” I am not talking about diligence and hard work. God’s word says “Whatever you do, do well.” (Ecc. 9:10) The “performance” I’m referring to is that elusive voice that tells us what we do is who we are. It fights to tell us our worth and value are completely tied up in what we achieve, earn, are recognized for and defined as on the “invisible ranking system.” The other enemy, “Entitlement” says we deserve and should get everything we want. We believe we are “owed something"... others owe us, we owe ourselves, or God owes us. Bottom line: The enemies of performance and entitlement work in tandem to keep us as believers in a constant state of discontentment and wanting more. This place of dissatisfaction is the very opposite of what Paul writes to his young minister in 1Timothy 6:6 “But Godliness with CONTENTMENT is great gain.” I love how Matthew 5:5 reads in the Message: “You’re blessed when you’re content with just who you are--no more, no less. That’s the moment you find yourselves proud owners of everything that can’t be bought.”

Cultivating true contentment in our own lives and helping our children to find that same contentment in God is the very foundation of having a genuine heart of gratitude.
Ephesians 2:4-9 says “But God is so rich in mercy, and He loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, He gave us life when He raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!) Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” We and our children can rest from the striving and struggling of performance to feel forgiven, accepted and worthy. We can find that inward contentment by receiving God’s free gift of righteousness in Christ Jesus.

One of my favorite scriptures written about Jesus is found in Philippians 2:6-8: “(Jesus), being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” We ourselves can also break free from the enemy of entitlement by fixing our eyes on Jesus and asking God to give us a proper and healthy estimation of ourselves.

My prayer is that our entire NCCS community would genuinely be touched by God’s overwhelming love for each of us. May we meditate on His great act of kindness toward us and may it spur us and our children to a new genuine place of gratitude that is content to simply walk with Him and answer His call on our life. We are truly not our own, we were bought with a price to bring glory to God.

Middle School Track & Field NAML Results

The 2016 Middle School Track & Field season was successful, both from a performance and participation standpoint. There were 45 students that made up this year's squad. During the season this team participated in six track meets, where numerous PR’s (personal records) were achieved in each meet. The season highlight was the NAML Championship meet, where our boys took 3rd place and our girls took 2nd place. Many great individual accomplishments helped contribute to our teams great showing in the meet, including performances from the following:
Synclair Savage (1st 100m, 2nd 200m, 1st long jump)
Kennedy Oglesby (1st 200m, 2nd 400m)
Kelly Ann Sutterfield (5th 1600m, 2nd 800m)
Mya Brown (2nd 300H), Aine Jones (4th 3200m)
Schuyler Heflin (5th Discus, 1st Shot Put)
Kennedy Fitch (2nd Long Jump)
Erica Milbourn (4th Discus)
Josiah Scott (2nd 100m, 1st 200m)
Shanard Banks (3rd 100m, 2nd 200m)
Connor Constantine (3rd 1600m, 2nd 3200m)
Brock Gowens (1st Discus, 3rd Shot Put)
Jon Grier (2nd Long Jump, 4th Triple Jump)
Miles Parrish (5th Long Jump)
In addition, our boys & girls 4x400m teams placed 2nd and our girls 4x100m team took 2nd. Our coaching staff felt blessed to see the encouragement and help the team members provided each other during practices throughout the season. They especially note the leadership shown by the 8th grade members of the team as they welcomed and helped the younger team members. Coach Lorenzo says, “It will be very exciting to see this squad grow and progress together throughout Middle School and High School.”
Congratulations on a great season, MS Track & Field!

Second Grade Travels Back in Time2ndFT3Web

Second grade students recently "traveled" back in time to the 1840’s as they visited the Tullie Smith House located at the Atlanta History Center. Students observed what life was like during this time as part of their "Our Country Long Ago" Social Studies unit. Students walked through the actual rooms of the Smith's plantation home, met a blacksmith and the family cook, and toured the slave cabin, gardens and barn! Through the hands-on experiences on the farm, students were able to compare how life was back then to their lives today.

Academy Actors Showcase

The Academy Actors are proud to present their Spring Showcase production of Barbara Pease Weber's "DelVal Divas." Set in the Delaware Valley Federal Corrections Facility, this mostly light-hearted comedy follows five middle-aged women who are incarcerated for various white collar crimes. The prison more resembles a country club where the ladies order in dinner and weekly have their nails done and enjoy a massage. Trouble arrives when one of their "suite-mates" is replaced by someone who is convicted of - gasp - murder. Come out and watch how the Divas help their new inmate prove her innocence and unravel a campy and fun murder mystery.

Admission is free and shows are Thursday (5/19) and Friday (5/20) at 7:00pm in the Fine Arts Building.

Prison.

It's funnier than you'd think.

If you would like more information about hosting one of these students, please contact Beth Wright in the Admissions Office.

Ensemble Performs in Lower School Chapel5th6thOrchestraWeb

This past Tuesday, an ensemble from the 5th and 6th grade orchestra had the opportunity to open the Lower School Chapel. They shared Psalm 150 - "Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals!; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!" Music is such a gift from God and these students beautifully played a collection of music from the Classical, Pop and Christian genres, closing with "Amazing Grace."
Great job, Lindsay Nichols, Hannah Cloete, Finley Ross, Avery Bayes, Chloe Glosson, Kelly Ann Sutterfield, Kayla Schulze, Sarah Row, Aine Jones, Isabella Brainard, Chichi Enyinda and Riley Piepmeier!

Academy Actors Showcase -
Final Performance Friday Night

The Academy Actors are proud to present their Spring Showcase production of Barbara Pease Weber's "DelVal Divas." Set in the Delaware Valley Federal Corrections Facility, this mostly light-hearted comedy follows five middle-aged women who are incarcerated for various white collar crimes. The prison more resembles a country club where the ladies order in dinner and weekly have their nails done and enjoy a massage. Trouble arrives when one of their "suitemates" is replaced by someone who is convicted of - gasp - murder. Come out and watch how the Divas help their new inmate prove her innocence and unravel a campy and fun murder mystery.

Admission is free and the show begins Friday night at 7:00pm in the Fine Arts Building.

Prison.

It's funnier than you'd think.

We are so grateful to Holly Pointer for faithfully serving in our carline on Friday mornings for the past eight years! R.I.S.E. Takes Forensics to the Real World!RISE

All of our 2nd-4th grade R.I.S.E. students spent the past quarter learning about the fascinating world of forensics. A few of the topics that students explored were handwriting analysis, identifying unknown substances, soil location analysis, ink chromatography, and analyzing spatter to determine height and angle. They took their new-found knowledge of forensics out into the real world as they visited the Acworth Police Department this past week. A local Federal Agent and Acworth Police Officer gave students a presentation that focused on how important forensics is in their line of work. Students took a tour of the facility that included seeing how fingerprinting takes place in their lab. They also learned about how evidence is collected and stored. Perhaps the students’ favorite part of the tour, however, was seeing the jail! R.I.S.E. students had a great day of learning about the interesting world of forensics.

Amazing Year Ahead!

NCCS Blog

The excitement level is at an all-time high as we begin the new school year! We believe that God is going to work in a mighty way in the lives of our students, faculty, and staff throughout the 2016-2017 school year! Some of our leadership team shared the following when asked what is fueling their excitement:

Todd Clingman, Head of School

ToddClingmanIn my 27 years in education, I've never been more excited as I am for this year about the faculty and staff that will be modeling, mentoring and discipling our NCCS students. We have an unbelievably talented, dedicated and passionate group of professional people serving the Lord and having an impact for His kingdom here at NCCS - and for that I am grateful - as a dad and as a Head of School.

Keith Bollinger, Athletics Director & Assistant Head of School KeithBollinger
I am most excited about how our coaches and student-athletes have worked extremely hard during the summer and their off season to prepare for the upcoming season. Also, I am excited to kick off our football season. We have finally taken the step to join the region. As we approach our 10th year of the program, we feel we have the stability with the coaching staff and players to compete. We appreciate your attendance and support of our teams and we hope you continue to attend and cheer loudly for our Eagles!

Beth Wright, Director of Admissions BethWright
I am extremely excited about the new administration that is joining our team - Wendy Titus as Lower School Principal and Craig Konchak as Middle School Principal. Their years of experience and their passion to lead the teachers and students are combined with their vision, creativity, and knowledge to provide solid leadership in their divisions.

Matthew Hendrix, Director of the Arts MatthewHendrix

I am excited that we are having a full length theatrical production in the fall involving middle and upper school students. This will be an opportunity for students who perhaps aren't the strongest singers and dancers to be involved in a show.

Wendy Titus, Lower School Principal
Titus WendyI am really looking forward to returning to Lower School, where I taught for several years, to lead our efforts in some exciting new directions. Specifically, I am thrilled to be launching the Foundation & Frameworks reading program, which incorporates research-based strategies into an instructional framework enabling the best practices of reading instruction. In addition, I am beyond excited about our Preschool Refocus - we have updated the physical space of the rooms and will be moving to a more hands-on approach to learning that intentionally focuses on fine and gross motor skills as well as academic content. In the area of technology, we will implement our new Seesaw School, which empowers students to independently document what they are learning at school and provide a great partnership with the students, teachers and families.

Craig Konchak, Middle School Principal KonchakCraig
My excitement this year in a new role at NCCS is the opportunity to serve and be surrounded by a tremendous army of faculty, staff and administration who are committed to NCCS families and the discovery of each child's unique genius.

Megan Strange, Upper School Principal
MeganStrangeI'm more excited than ever about the opportunity that we have to equip young minds to think biblically and to pursue truth all the days of their lives. In the culture we live in, there are a ton of competing interests that try to distract us from God's best for our lives. NCCS is a place where we are blessed to partner with families and teachers who desire to live lives that point to the truth of the gospel...a never changing truth for an ever changing culture.

“Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight them.”

Lower School Launches Grade Level Websites

Parents of K5 - 4th grade students -
We are pleased to launch new grade level websites that will be used to communicate “What’s coming!” Each class site will allow you to pull up the Bible Verse, Spelling Words, Class reminders, and more on your device - anywhere, anytime. These class websites will replace the paper newsletter found in the Friday Folders.

Lower School Back to School Night

We want to invite all lower school parents to join our teachers at our LS Back to School Night. Two identical sessions will be held on Thursday, August 18, at 6:00pm and 7:15pm. Important details for each grade, such as expectations and curriculum, will be covered and we hope you can join us!

In Chapel Next Week

Lower School Chapel - Tuesday
Wendy Titus, Lower School Principal, will be speaking in both Lower School chapels about the Fruit of the Spirit, with a focus on Patience. Students are learning that when the Fruit of the Spirit is in our lives, we show people that "Jesus is in me".
The 1st - 4th grade chapel is in the gym from 8:10- 8:45am and Mrs. Martin’s class will lead the pledges. The K3 - K5 chapel is also in the gym from 8:50-9:20am and pledges will be led by Mrs. Hubbs’ class.

Middle School Chapel - Thursday
Middle School students will hear from 8th Grade Bible teacher Nick Steinichen and also have student government candidate speeches in a combined chapel in the gym. Middle School Chapel is on Thursday from 9:40-10:25am.

Parents are always welcome to join us for chapel!

Middle & Upper School Retreats

We are excited about all of our retreats coming up in the next few weeks! Upper School will be going to Shocco Springs in Talladega, AL from Wednesday, August 17-Friday, August 19. The 7th and 8th grade will be going to Woodlands Camp in Cleveland, GA from Wednesday, August 24-Friday, August 26. The 6th grade will be going to Cherokee Outdoor YMCA from Thursday, August 25-Friday, August 26, with the 5th grade joining them on Friday, August 26.

More information on each retreat will be emailed home. All students need to be sure to sign the Retreat Registration Form as well update the Medical Form in RenWeb prior to the retreats.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Nathan Wright, NCCS Student Life Director. We are believing for some of our best retreats yet and really appreciate your prayers for this foundational time for our students!

Circle of Prayer - Tuesday, August 23COP2

We hope you will make plans to join together with students, faculty, staff, families, local pastors, and community guests on Tuesday, August 23, for our 18th Annual Circle of Prayer at 8:30am. This is one of our favorite events of the year as we gather for a time of prayer and worship and ask for God's blessings for the year ahead.

Please invite your church pastor to attend our special Pastor's breakfast at 7:30am followed by the Circle of Prayer. We have sent invitations to the majority of our local pastors; however, a personal invitation from your family will mean so much to them. Look for an informational e-mail coming in the next week with details about this special event.
Special note: The Circle of Prayer will be a chapel dress day for all lower, middle, and upper school students.
