NCCS Teen Age Republicans Participate in GOP GOPDayWebLeadership Day

On Monday, February 6, eight members of the NCCS Teen Age Republican Club had the privilege of participating in GOP Leadership Day at the Georgia State Capitol. Our students were honored to meet with Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, Senator Judson Hill, and Representative Ed Setzler on this day, which was a great opportunity for them to learn more about discussions that are taking place in the political process and how that involves all Georgians. The goal of the TAR club is for students to learn how to utilize their thinking and learning experiences at NCCS to ultimately impact our country for the sake of the gospel.

NCCS ACT & SAT Scores Rise in 2016

In today's world of college admissions so many factors are considered, such as a student’s GPA, co-curricular activities, community service, awards and achievements, propensity for leadership, portfolio of unique and innovative experiences, number of honors and AP courses, recommendation letters, etc. In addition to these many factors, a student’s performance on the ACT and/or SAT test is still an important variable in the college admissions equation. With that in mind, it is exciting to report that the 2016 SAT and ACT scores for our North Cobb Christian School students had very positive results. As you can see from the tables below, the 2016 NCCS SAT scores are up 51 points from a year ago while the nation is - 4, Georgia is +8 and Cobb County is +4. On the ACT, NCCS was up 1.3 points while the nation was -.2, the state was +.1 and Cobb County +.1. Congratulations to our students, as well as the teachers that impact these types of improvements. Also, a big thank you to NCCS College Counselor Karen Bollinger for the tireless efforts that she pours into our college counseling process at NCCS!

Senior Receives Air Force Academy Appointment

Congratulations to NCCS senior Mark Watson who has earned an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. Mark has long been committed to dedicating his life to serving our country and has worked hard all along the path to have this incredible opportunity. Congratulations, Mark!

Collaborative New Technology Project

NCCS Upper School Technology teacher Jim Bitner has piloted a new technology class this year called C3 (Computing.Cloud.Collaboration). This semester his two C3 classes are working on a cross-class collaborative project that involves multiple team roles working together using Cloud tools to create a business.

The White Day C3 class has the project managers for the teams and the Blue Day C3 has the design/development team members. The project managers are overseeing the design and development of the multiple deliverables (e.g. business proposal, logo, slogan, commercial) by the other team members. The teams are leveraging the Google suite of Cloud Tools (e.g. Docs, Slides, Sheets, Gmail) with Adobe products like Photoshop and Illustrator, along with Cloud tools like Wix and Weebly.

The goal is to model the business world and use the Cloud environment and work collaboratively to create the deliverables. A project timeline is developed with deadlines - and obstacles like resource rebalancing, legal review of deliverables, and budget adjustments are thrown in the mix to give the students a taste of real life business hurdles.SpanishWeb

Spanish Classes Share Across Divisions

Señor McDonald’s Dual Enrollment Spanish class recently visited Señora Guerrero’s second grader classes to share story books that they created as part of a project on “household chores.” The Upper School students really enjoyed visiting with the Lower School students and teaching them some new vocabulary in creative ways. The second graders loved getting to show the “big kids” all the vocabulary they already knew as well. It was a great time of interaction and fellowship!

Economics Class Learns About Entrepreneurship from NCCS Family

NCCS Economics classes recently took a field trip to Pop Bubble Tea and Coffee Bar to learn a lesson on entrepreneurship. Pop Bubble Tea and Coffee Bar, located next to Poblano’s and near Staples, is a startup business established by NCCS family Greg, Karen, and Elizabeth Earp. This new business had just opened their doors the day before the Economics classes came, so it was a good opportunity for the Pop worker to test their new skills in front of our high school students. Each class came during their Economics period, and got the chance to purchase one of the many variety of flavors and combinations flavored teas and fruit pearls, as well as locally sourced bakery items. After the students enjoyed their treats, Mr. Earp talked to the students about the details of starting a new business, from concept stage to the importance of choosing the right location, to the experimentation of the flavors. The classes especially enjoyed hearing about how their classmate, Elizabeth Earp (9th grade), contributed to the business as the interior designer and the originator of the name “Pop Bubble Tea and Coffee Bar.” Thanks to the Earps for a warm welcome to our students! For more information about this great business, visit their website: www.popbubbleteabar.com

Beta Club Helps with Fundraiser

The NCCS Beta Club had a very special opportunity to serve on February 11 at the Angels for Adyson 5k, which is a road race sponsored by the Macland Baptist Church Youth Group to help with the medical expenses of Adyson Harrah, a Hillgrove High School Senior. Adyson was diagnosed with a rare blood disease this junior year, which led to him having to stay at Egleston Hospital for months, and caused him the loss of his left eye. Macland Youth Director John Thompson reached out to several high schools for volunteers to help with the 5k road race, which was also a Peachtree qualifier, and our NCCS Beta Club was happy to lend a hand! Beta Club members helped as course workers and cleaned up after the race, and MANY actually ran the 5k race or the 1k run/walk. ALL proceeds from the race went to help the Harrah family with medical bills. Probably the most touching part of the race was the fact that Adyson completed the 1K and handed out the awards to all the runners. NCCS students actually took home several medals in the race - with Connor Constantine winning overall, Halle Meier taking first place for the ladies’ 15-18 year old age bracket, and Nick Love taking second place for the men’s 15-18 year old age bracket. Everyone who participated in the race or served was a winner because they got to show the love of Christ to their neighbor, the very courageous Adyson Harrah. Please continue to pray for Adyson and his family as he still has an uphill battle.

Students Volunteer for “Night to Shine Prom”

Last Friday night several churches including NorthStar and First Baptist of Woodstock hosted The Tim Tebow Foundation's Night To Shine Prom, and what a night it was! Guests with special needs were able to experience being King and Queen of the Prom. The event hosted guests ages 14 and up, with each guest being paired with a buddy for the night. Hundreds of volunteers, including several of our NCCS Upper School students, helped to make this night a memorable one for all. The guests were greeted to paparazzi and cheers on the red carpet as they entered the venue and they stayed entertained with limo rides, hair and makeup, nail salon, karaoke, and of course plenty of dancing! The love shared with all of the guests was obviously felt as displayed by the sheer joy on their faces as the evening progressed. To share God’s love with these awesome guests on that special night touched the hearts of each and every volunteer at the event. We are so proud of our students for being a part of such a great event!

March is Youth Art Month, which is dedicated to celebrating the visual arts! During the month of March, schools across the world celebrate the fine arts and their importance in everyday life. Fine arts empower students by providing an outlet for self-expression while developing creative thinking skills that can be applied to any subject. Y.A.M. recognizes the skills developed through visual arts experiences, including problem solving, creativity, observation and communication. The theme for the 2016/2017 school year is “United Through Art.”

To help promote and celebrate Youth Art Month, all NCCS students are invited to participate in the Y.A.M. Drawing Challenge beginning Monday, March 6. Each week during the month of March there will be a new set of drawing topics from which to choose. At the end of the month, any student who has completed all of the drawings in the challenge will be entered into a drawing in which they could win an awesome art prize! For more information, see Mrs. Heflin in room 301. Happy Drawing!

NCCS Law Students Visit the Acworth Police Department

Special thanks to the Acworth Police Department for recently hosting our Upper School Law class. The Acworth PD is always so gracious to allow us to visit their facilities and provide guest speakers as students continue their exploration of the field of law. NCCS Law Teacher Clint Strange said, "Since we created this class 7 years ago, the partnership we have enjoyed with our Acworth Police Department has allowed us to take this class much deeper into the workings of law enforcement than most high school students have the opportunity to go. This class continues to spur conversations regarding ethics that prepare our students for various situations they will encounter in life." The law class takes a look at a number of areas of the law and gives students practical opportunities to apply their new legal knowledge as they start each class with their interactive "Opening Statements."

Lower School Fruit Focus

Lower School wrapped up their Fruit Focus on Goodness by honoring one student from each class, K4 - 4th grade. Students were recognized for demonstrating the quality of Goodness as they demonstrated "I will do what is right." (First - Fourth grade students voted on a fellow classmate they observed demonstrating this Fruit of the Spirit consistently.)

Congratulations to Colton Bell, Mason Meadows, Isaiah Fung-A-Wing, Shayla Henderson, Averi Smith, Grant Pool, Ariana Fuller, Avery Thaxton, Carson Burris, Hayden Burris, Grant Pool, Quin Cardon, Lindsey Meier, Dalton Stevens, Lila Isaac, Kaylee Snow and Mitchell Eckard.

This group enjoyed a special breakfast together with Mrs. Titus to celebrate being honored for demonstrating goodness.

Kindness Challenge For Lower School

As a part of the Fruit of the Spirit emphasis on kindness in chapel this week, the Lower School students will be given a chance to cultivate this particular fruit in their lives with the “Great Kindness Challenge!” This challenge is very similar to what the Middle School students did last month. Going along with the video series theme starring Inspector Apple, each student will be given a kindness challenge checklist as their "top secret service mission." They will get to check off various acts of kindness/service that they complete over the next week and when the students complete their kindness challenge checklist, they can turn it in for a kindness brag tag! A kindness chain link strand for each student’s completed challenge will be added to a long strand displayed in the Lower School cafeteria so that everyone can see the effects of their kindness all together.

NCCS Upper School Student Government Change for a Change Updatechange1

Thank you so much to all of our 5th-12th grade students that participated in our recent Change for a Change Fundraiser to show love to our neighbor John. At the last chapel before Winter Break, we announced that our students had generously given over $7,000 towards this need, far exceeding our goal of $5,000. Thank you for going above and beyond to show the love of Christ and to truly make a change in the life of this man. The generosity of our students, their families, and our faculty and staff continues to be one of the most special parts of our NCCS community!

NHS Members Serve at Atlanta Food Bank

On Saturday, February 25, twenty-three National Honor Society members donated their time to work at the Atlanta Food Bank. This is a great organization that provides nutritious food to the people who need it. It is always an extremely fun experience for everyone who participates. Our group divided and conquered as all of the students worked together in different areas of the warehouse to sort essential food, clothing, and toiletries for those in need. At the end of the event, the students had sorted through 16,715 pounds of goods which could feed 11,472 people. All of our students loved working at the warehouse alongside students from Spelman College and the Girl Scouts. The Atlanta Food Bank ministry is made possible by volunteers and serves an incredible community purpose. “I really enjoyed knowing that I was giving back to my community and being able to feed over 11,000 people,” said NHS President TJ Anderson.

Crush the Keyboard Camptyping

Does your child need help with proper typing fundamentals? Is texting causing him to create bad habits? We can help! Come join us to “Crush the Keyboard” at camp June 12-16. Join us for a week of competition and fun as we crush the keys and improve our typing speed. While voice to text and texting keypads are continuing to become part of the technology practices we use daily, typing on a traditional keypad is still a valuable skill worth improving. Being able to type faster will help students become more efficient in time management for assignments requiring typed papers as a form of assessment. While a week of fundamentals and fun competitions will not produce a keyboarding pro, hopefully it will inspire a habit of practice to keep the skill progressing toward perfection. We will focus on fundamentals through familiar online typing skill builders and infuse it with group and individual competitions. To register for this camp, click [HERE].

10 Questions You Need To Ask When Choosing A Private Christian School

10 Questions You Need To Ask When Choosing A Private Christian School

Are you considering a private school for your child? A school search can seem daunting, but arming yourself with the right information can make the job easier.

Whether your child is already in school and you’re considering a change, or if they’ll be heading to kindergarten in the fall, this list of 10 key questions will help you find the right school for your student.

1. Does the school have a particular educational philosophy or mission?Preschool2
This is a vital question that will impact what ideals your child will learn. Many parents seek a private Christian school to help ensure those ideals align with what they are teaching their children at home. At North Cobb Christian School, we provide a biblically based, academically excellent education in a nurturing environment, developing students’ potential to impact their world for Christ.

2. How do your programs prepare students for college? What is the average SAT score or college acceptance rate of your students?
While almost every school claims to offer a college prep curriculum, numbers such as scores or acceptance rates tell you how well the school is meeting the goal of college preparation.

3. Do teachers seem enthusiastic and knowledgeable, asking questions that stimulate students and keep them engaged?
When you take a tour, ask to be able to sit in several classrooms long enough to get a feel for the environment and observe teacher and student interactions.

4. What is the average amount of homework each night for my child’s grade level?
A school’s homework expectations should balance rigor with time for extracurricular activities, family time, and sleep.

5. Is tutoring or support offered for students who need extra help?
Most children are not strong performers in every single subject. Find out if the school has support systems in place to help students who may struggle in a particular area. Tutoring, coaching, learning labs, cognitive training, and more are helping students thrive and succeed in our school’s Moving Forward Program.

6. Is the school accredited?
Accreditation shows the school has been evaluated by an outside agency and is dedicated to standards of excellence. North Cobb Christian School is accredited by two different entities - Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and AdvancEd (formerly SACS).MSScience

7. What is this school’s approach to student discipline and safety?
While you may have a perfectly behaved child, it’s good to know if a school has policies that foster good behavior and a safe environment.

8. How are the arts incorporated into the curriculum and what arts classes are available at various grade levels?
Research shows the arts build skills that increase academic performance. With 14 performing ensembles across all grade levels, as well as a strong visual arts program, students have abundant arts opportunities at North Cobb Christian School.

9. What do you offer in athletics and what is your athletics philosophy?
Look for a school that considers athletics a tool to help students learn cooperation, sportsmanship, discipline, and other important principles. Find out if younger children have opportunities to try new sports.

10. Are there fees in addition to tuition, such as lab fees, activity fees, uniform costs, etc.?
Add up the tuition plus any other fees you may be charged at each school you are considering. This will help you make accurate cost comparisons.

Cassie Carr — Geometry Teacher Shapes Young Lives

Cassie Carr — Geometry Teacher Shapes Young Lives

Cassie Carr is passionate about investing in students’ lives. While math is her area of expertise, sheconsiders pointing young people to Christ the most rewarding part of her job. Ms. Carr teaches geometry in the North Cobb Christian School Upper School and imparts valuable critical thinking skills that will benefit students for a lifetime.

After completing her education degree, Ms. Carr began searching for a school that would allow her to use her knowledge and skills for God’s glory. She started substituting at North Cobb Christian School in the spring of 1992 and officially joined the staff in a full-time capacity in the fall of 1992.

Each morning she is reminded of why she chose this career.CassieWeb2

“My favorite part of the day is the beginning of every class when students walk in,” Ms. Carr said. “I am so glad to see each one of them and love that we get to pray together before we begin the lesson.”

Prayer is an important part of the NCCS academic program. Teachers serve as mentors to students, getting to know what is on their hearts and praying for them on a daily basis. Likewise, students are encouraged to lift up their peers in prayer. Starting class this way is a reminder of our school’s purpose: developing students to impact the world for Christ.

Ms. Carr is deeply invested in preparing her students for the future. She explains, “The academic program at NCCS provides so many opportunities to enrich the interests of students and to prepare them for the next step. It is a college-prep program and students have the opportunity to choose a rigorous path with many offerings in honors, AP, and college dual-enrollment courses.”

As the geometry teacher, she sees firsthand how students benefit from developing strong reasoning and critical thinking skills.

“Math teaches students to determine what information is important and how to relate that information,” Ms. Carr said. “It is so very rewarding to see how students grow in their ability to think through situations in class and outside of class.”

But it’s not math, science, writing, or history that makes NCCS different — it’s the mission. According to Ms. Carr, the NCCS Upper School’s academics, athletics, and arts programs stand out, but not as much as the teachers’ dedication to their students.

“We are dedicated to working together to cultivate hearts to care and encourage, challenging minds to think deeply, and to impact culture for Christ and His Kingdom,” she said. “I love getting to work alongside the best group of teachers who are like-minded in pointing students to Christ.”

Big Hearts!BigHeartsWeb

Fourth graders Lilli Looper and Ann Marie McNiff were inspired by Mrs. Titus' comment in chapel one week that "Fourth graders have great ideas." After hearing about the need for water filters in Haiti, the two entrepreneurs put their heads together and came up with a truly great idea. The girls put their talents to good use and created jewelry, stress bands and key chains from rainbow looms and then sold them to lower school students for $1 during Early Care on Wednesday, March 1. There was a such a high demand the girls sold again on Friday, March 3rd, raising their total to $122.72 for both days - that's enough money for 3 water filters for the people in Haiti! We're very proud of Lilli and Ann Marie!

Lower School Completes Great Kindness Challenge

To live out the Fruit of the Spirit emphasis on “kindness” in chapel last week and this week, Lower School students were given The Great Kindness Challenge checklist. Students completed acts of kindness throughout the week and received a total of 506 colorful paper chain links for completing certain percentages of the checklist. The chain link stretched from one end of the gym to the other and this only represented a fraction of the amount of kind acts that the students performed! 221 students received brag tags for participating and hundreds more were recipients of their acts of kindness! The kindness chain link strand is now hanging in the Lower School cafeteria to celebrate and continue to encourage kindness.

Anatomy with a Creative Twist

An original song, a children’s book, a painting, a “blood vessel” full of the various blood components, and a realistic 3-D model of the heat - these are just some of the projects that students chose to create during their circulatory system unit in Anatomy. As they studied the heart, blood, and blood vessels, students were tasked with selecting an area of interest, becoming an “expert,” and coming up with a creative way to share their knowledge with others. They did a tremendous job of unleashing their creativity!

Great Night on the Nile!

We were truly overwhelmed by the generosity of our NCCS families at the NCCS Benefit Dinner and Auction - “A Night on the Nile.” Whether you attended the event or silently bid from the comfort of your home, you were a part of an exciting night for NCCS - which raised a net profit of $172,500 for our school! The ballroom was fit for a pharaoh as a sphinx, an Egyptian guard, Cleopatra and even a camel watched over the festivities. It was such a joy to see NCCS parents, grandparents, alumni and alumni parents enjoying an evening out together and having SO much fun supporting the school! Tremendous thanks to all who attended, donated auction items, purchased items and helped on the auction committee! The night truly was a celebration of God’s blessings at NCCS! Check out pictures of the evening [HERE].

We would like to offer special thanks to our event sponsors:

Second Grade
Nicholas Prince - 2nd place
Third Grade
Grace Heiple - 1st place
Chrissy Roache - 4th place
Fourth Grade

First Grade Economics Fair

Our first graders experienced how the economy works by participating in an economics fair in which the students took on the roles of both producers and consumers. After being divided into job teams, the students collaborated and created a storefront and determined what they would be selling and how much they would charge for their goods or service. The businesses they created included a lemonade stand, a cookie store, a trinket shop, a school supply store, and a book basket cleaning service. The students were also given the opportunity to shop the fair. Before shopping, they were given ten dollars to use to create a budget. Savings and charity were included in their budgets and they could only spend what they budgeted for. The economics fair was a huge success and our first graders enjoy learning about how the economy works.

K4 Dinosaur Day

The Dinosaurs are all gone! K4 classes witnessed a volcanic eruption which caused the dinos to become extinct. The students enjoyed a really cool science experiment as they participated in causing the eruption by adding baking soda to the vinegar base acid. They were excited to see the chemical reaction that released carbon dioxide gas when bubbling out of the volcano. After the experiment the class enjoyed a special treat of, dinosaur claws (bugles) and swamp water (a mixture of lime sherbet and sprite). And Dinosaur Day would not be complete without the dinosaur pokey! Such a super fun day in K4!

Read Across America Week:
Green Eggs and Ham

I will eat them here or there, I will eat them anywhere...even in the K5 classroom! That’s right, our kindergarten students tried green eggs and ham! It was amazing to see the students try something new and like it. They loved reading Dr. Seuss books and as part of their week of Seuss books, they compared and contrasted their favorite Dr. Seuss books, decorated socks for a fox, and even distinguished real words from silly nonsense words. We thank you, Dr. Seuss, for all your fun imaginative books that have created a love for reading for so many!

SHINE Follow Up

We are so proud of the love and generosity of our Lower School students through SHINE! They have given generously for the Upper School Spring Term Project for Clean Water Filters for Haiti. Their goal was to raise enough money to purchase 50 water filters, but they blew past that goal with a grand total of $2975.81 - enough for 74 filters! Special congratulations to Mrs. Collins' class for leading the way with $1283.85! The stories behind their generosity are so amazing and we are grateful for their caring hearts.

Students Honored for Kindness

Lower School wrapped up their Fruit Focus on Kindness by honoring one student from each class K4 - 4th grade. Students were recognized for demonstrating the quality of Kindness as they demonstrated I will be nice to everyone. (First - Fourth grade students voted on a fellow classmate they observed demonstrating this Fruit of the Spirit consistently.)

Congratulations to Bella Tidwell, Kendall Smith, Allison Parker, Kaelyn Powell, Ethan Hudgins, Mack Meadows, Morgan Maner, Avery Lomant, Autumn Smith, Doug Long, Daniel Rivera, Halle Carden, Ann Marie McNiff, Kenley Cole, and Jordan Greene.

Would you like some Pi?PiDay2Web

The Middle School Math Department celebrated Pi Day with a sweet treat! Isn’t it amazing that the God of the universe shows himself in even the smallest ways? Who else could have created an irrational number that works perfectly whenever it is used? After working so hard in math all year, students got to take a little time to celebrate the wonder of Pi. Not only did they celebrate Pi Day on 3/14, but the students were able to enjoy a sweet treat while participating in various class activities related to Pi. Eighth Graders competed in a class Pi Competition in which students competed by seeing who memorized the most digits of Pi. Congratulations to 8th graders Rachel Turnbough and Macie Rainwater who memorized over 50 digits!

FREE childcare will be available for NCCS families with children age 3 (potty trained)-6th grade - rsvp to Mandy Johnson by Tuesday, April 25

Thanks to Technology, our world has changed. If you’ve ever felt frustrated, confused, or angry about what technology is doing to your kids, you aren’t alone. With the youngest generations, technology is no longer a tool, it's an appendage. Technology is where your kids spend their free time, build their social status, create personas, and create achievement. Spending this much time with technology is changing them, and we need to be ready with a response. In this session on how help your students develop a healthy relationship with technology we will discuss:

 - Why technology and social media in particular has become so powerful
 - The effect technology is having on us, our culture, and on our kids
 - Scientific approaches to parenting our kids through this issue
 - Biblical values for “the good life” and how we can help our kids find it

NCCS Athletics Announces
New Softball Coaches

North Cobb Christian School is excited to announce new coaching leadership for the Middle School and Varsity Softball Program for the Fall 2017 season.

EmilyWrightWebEmily Wright has accepted the position as Head Varsity Softball coach after three seasons as Head Coach for the Middle School team. She compiled a 24-15 record during that time while developing key players and a winning culture for NCCS. Coach Wright took over the Middle School program which had not won a game the previous year. Under her coaching, the Middle School Softball team has competed for the Metro Championship the past two seasons, with two second place finishes.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be entrusted with the responsibility of serving as the Varsity Softball head coach,” says Coach Wright. “I see so much untapped potential within the program, and am eager to begin working together to see that potential come to fruition.”

NCCS has also announced Jeremy Hawkins as the Head Middle School Coach, taking over for Coach Hawkins JeremyWebWright. Coach Hawkins served as the Middle School Assistant Coach this past season and was crucial to the team returning to the Metro Championship. With an eye on building a softball program and a focus on continuity, Coach Wright and Coach Hawkins will be working in tandem to develop and teach players to contribute at each level for the Eagles Softball Program.

“I am proud of what the girls accomplished last year and believe the standard has been set for the Middle School Program,” says Coach Hawkins. “Our program will be set up for the future and I can’t wait to begin working on a championship season.”

Keith Bollinger, North Cobb Christian School Athletic Director, applauds the dynamic approach that Coach Wright is using to build a softball program that is being developed to be sustainable and successful. “We are taking a proactive approach to building our softball program,” says Bollinger. “Coach Wright and Coach Hawkins both understand that we need to have a consistent message for our girls on each level and have displayed great coaching relationships that will be felt from Middle School to Varsity.”

The softball coaching staff will be rounded out with Coach Nate Rupp, who has been the assistant JV Baseball Coach/Assistant Varsity Softball Coach for 2016-2017, and Coach Jimmy Keane, current Head Varsity Baseball Coach. These coaches will have involvement in both the Middle School and Varsity levels, assisting the Head Coaches as needed.

The future is bright for our NCCS Softball program! Go, Lady Eagles!

Orchestra & Band Students Attend Atlanta Symphony Performance

Fourth grade orchestra and band students were delighted by the music of the award-winning Atlanta Symphony 4thASOTripWebOrchestra last Wednesday as they traveled on a musical field trip to Lassiter High School Performance Hall. Students learned how musical composers used elements of music like Dynamics, Tempo, Timbre, Tonality and Texture to give musical representation to animals and stories. They heard the sounds of Bumble Bees right in the auditorium as the ASO played Flight of the Bumblebee by Rimsky-Korsakov, Double basses sounding like an elephant in The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saens, the story of a boy and his cat - I Bought Me A Cat by Aaron Copeland and finished with Peter and The Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev. To top off the awesome day, students had lunch at the Varsity where "What'll ya have?" was heard throughout as students enjoyed the delicious and fun food there. Seeds of music were planted deep in the hearts of the students as they listened and experienced the joy of music. Those seeds will hopefully grow as they continue to develop and mature in orchestra and band this year.

Second Grade Visits New Echota Historical Site

Second grade students traveled back in time to visit New Echota Historical Site on March 22! Cherokee Indian history came to life as students visited missionary Samuel Worchester's home built in 1828, the Council House, the Court House, a middle class farm and house, and saw how the printing press turned the famous Cherokee alphabet into the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper. Students also went to the site where the treaty was signed that ultimately led the Cherokee to leave their land and move west. Allie Contreras from Ms. Romine's class said, "My favorite part was going into the missionaries' house and seeing where the guests stayed." As students dive deeper into learning about Georgia, they especially enjoyed seeing the history that is in our own backyard!

Environmental Science Classes Visit Butler Creek Watershed

Environmental Science classes took a field trip in our own backyard this past week. The Corp of Engineers property is part of the Butler Creek Watershed, and the students had the opportunity to learn more about this with an educator from the Watershed Stewardship program, part of the Cobb County Water System. Students first learned about the different macroinvertebrates that are part of Georgia's waterways and indicators of a healthy stream, then moved to the creek to see which of those things they could find. They are happy to report that our part of Butler Creek is healthy and they had some great finds - dragonfly larva, midge fly larva, and a freshwater clam were all present, as well as beaver and deer tracks nearby. All of these indicate a well-functioning ecosystem in our area! The Watershed Stewardship program has some excellent educational information as well as various volunteer opportunities. If you are interested in learning more about things you could do to participate for community service hours, contact Mrs. Epp for details.

Admission is FREE
FREE childcare will be available for NCCS families with children age 3 (potty trained)-6th grade - rsvp to Mandy Johnson by Tuesday, April 25

Thanks to technology, our world has changed. If you’ve ever felt frustrated, confused, or angry about what technology is doing to your kids, you aren’t alone. With the youngest generations, technology is no longer a tool, it's an appendage. Technology is where your kids spend their free time, build their social status, create personas, and create achievement. Spending this much time with technology is changing them, and we need to be ready with a response. In this session on how to help your students develop a healthy relationship with technology we will discuss:

- Why technology and social media in particular has become so powerful
- The effect technology is having on us, our culture, and on our kids
- Scientific approaches to parenting our kids through this issue
- Biblical values for “the good life” and how we can help our kids find itAndrewMcPeakWeb

Speaker: Andrew McPeak, Program Excellence Manager with Growing Leaders
Andrew is a millennial speaker and content developer with Growing Leaders. His experiences as both presenter and curriculum designer have led him to become well versed in communicating to and about the next generations.

Please spread the word about this important free seminar to family and friends at church, in your neighborhoods, and wherever you are involved with other parents. All are welcome!

Showing Our Gratitude

Each grade in Lower School has taken part in the first, patriotic themed, Gratitude Banquet as a service project to honor first responders and those that help our community. In preparation for hosting the Gratitude Banquet, fourth grade recently completed a Manners Unit from a biblical approach. As Philippians 2:4 says, “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Topics covered in the manners unit included: introducing yourself, a proper handshake, how to carry on a conversation without yes/no type questions involved, showing interest in others with your conversation, table manners, and buffet etiquette. Students learned that when we use our best manners, we are thinking of others around us which is pleasing to Christ.
In preparation for the big day, all of our lower school classes worked hard with a servant’s heart.

K3 - K5 - Decorated large white squares placed on the center of tableGratitude3Web
1st - Wrapped silverware and set out napkins
2nd - Assembled centerpieces and set out plates
3rd - Room set up & table cloths and served the day of banquet
4th - Room set up & table cloths, hosted our guests the day of banquet
Everyone - Circled the gym to sing and pray for our special guests.

Then, on Thursday, March 30th, all of our students came to school filled with anticipation and excitement! K3 - 3rd students came dressed in their lower school t-shirts and fourth grade students came dressed in their best to greet special guests from the community who attended the Gratitude Banquet and eat lunch with them. Students and their special guests played tic-tac-toe games, had a picture made together at the photo booth, and got to know each other as they enjoyed a wonderful brunch buffet catered by The Marietta Local. Third grade did a terrific job welcoming and seating guests, serving drinks and keeping us refreshed throughout the brunch. K3-3rd grade ended our presentation by surrounding our guests in song and prayer to say “thank you for your service”. This will be a special service day that students and community helpers won’t forget!

K3 Kite Day!KiteDay3Web

On Wednesday morning our K3 students headed out to the baseball field for a fun morning of kite flying with their families! Parents and children enjoyed the beautiful sunshine along with an occasional gust of wind as they ran across the ball field with their kites flying high. Some students from the "DIY" Spring Term team joined in the fun and lended a hand putting kites together and hanging out with us. Our kite celebration ended with a delicious picnic before heading back to the classroom for a well needed afternoon nap.

4th Graders Experience 5th Grade Adventure

Fourth grade students were introduced to their new Middle School family this past Monday. Students participated in an assembly with the Middle School Principal, Craig Konchak and Middle School Counselor, Bethany Poplin. Prior to embarking on the 5th grade adventure, the fourth graders wrote some questions on a 3X5 card and participated in an "open mic" Q&A where they received colorful commentary from current 5th grade students, Avery Seiz, Alexander Nelson, Chase Konchak, Halle Hillyer, and Caroline Epp. The 4th grade visitors spent the remainder of their 1/2 day experiencing a sneak peak of the classroom, an overview of Student Life with Coach Poplin and the adventures of Middle School Lunch with Mrs. Debbie McGregor. Students also received a parting gift from their 5th grade counterparts as they were dismissed back into the land of Lower School. This is an awesome group of 4th graders that we are excited to welcome into the NCCS Middle School.

Baseball Alumni Honored at Dinner

North Cobb Christian School Baseball hosted the first Alumni and Baseball Celebration Dinner on Friday, April 7. The event was designed to honor the past players and coaches who have been a part of the deep baseball history at NCCS and over 90 players, parents, and coaches, as well as over 15 baseball alumni were in attendance. Fleet Lester, Michael Clayton, Jim Tidwell, Drew VonNeida, Ryan McGovern, and Tyler Jones gave incredible talks about how the baseball program impacted them throughout their time at NCCS.

The evening was made even more memorable by the retiring of Coach Chris Stafford’s baseball jersey. Chris Stafford served as head baseball coach from 2000-2010 and won two state championships while building a winning baseball culture at NCCS. Past players gathered to present Coach Stafford with a signed jersey, a picture book capturing some of the best moments of his career, and a customized Old Hickory bat.

Dress Code Change for 2017-2018

With cost, culture and ease for students and parents in mind, NCCS will not require chapel dress for any students beginning in the 2017-2018 school year. Students will wear regular dress code on Monday through Thursday and may wear spirit wear (NCCS t-shirt/sweatshirt and jeans) on Fridays.
Chapel dress on chapel day will be optional. There may be a couple of special dress days during the year (like career day), but there will be sufficient notice given before those days take place.

Pathways Leadership Camping Adventure

Pathways1Web

This past weekend, twenty of our 7th and 8th-grade students went on a camping trip as part of the Pathways Program experience. Since the rebirth of our Pathways program last year, the Middle School bible department has partnered with LeaderTreks to create a curriculum to help develop some really amazing leaders within our school. This year was the first year for our students to have an opportunity to be led on a leadership adventure by our own staff, as well as three well-trained staff from the LeaderTreks.

The camping experience took place in Sumter National Forest just over the border into South Carolina near Pathways2WebClayton, Georgia. As soon as the students got off the bus, they began their challenging adventure by putting tents together with one team member blindfolded. Every moment of the trip was filled with purpose and initiative and students were able to grow mentally, spiritually, emotionally, socially, and physically. Students shared their experiences in Monday Meeting this week and the common theme from each student was "If you are going to go on this trip next year... Go all in!" Students learned that sometimes we have to take the "hard line" and make the difficult choice to do what is right. If asked how the trip was, these students won’t simply say “It was good” - they will tell you about the leadership principles they learned, how they grew in their faith, how they strengthened friendships and made new ones, how much they "loved" the dehydrated backpacker's meals, and most importantly, that they grew as a person and are excited about making an impact on their culture. Please check out the Highlight Video to see all the pictures and experiences. According to Hunter Poplin, Assistant Director of Student Life, “We had an amazing weekend! We look forward to seeing the impact these young leaders will have in the coming days, weeks, months, and years!”

Thanks to the following leaders for creating such an amazing few days for our students:
Mindy - LeaderTreks guide and Dustin and Jesse who are a part of the LeaderTreks staff.
Craig Konchak, Heidi Konchak, and Amber Holley - for helping to guide the students on this experience
Bethany Poplin - for helping organize all the details of the trip.
Parents - for allowing your students to go on this trip and share in such an awesome experience!

Special Guest in Upper School Science Classes

Dr. Dan Evert, a Climate Change Activist and computer science professor from the University of Georgia, ChemistryWebvisited our AP Environmental and Honors Chemistry Classes on April 20. Through Climate Voices, Dr. Evert has dedicated his work to educating the public about the policies surrounding Anthropocentric Climate Change. Dr. Dan feels called to share his passion with others about changes in our environment.

In AP Environmental Science, Dr. Dan dove deeply into why there is a partisan debate surrounding climate change. "The debate is not the existence of climate change, just in the justification of our denial of climate change." Students participated in a dialogue on topics such a demographic transition, nuclear energy, electric cars and the United States’ position in the Paris Accord. Students easily made connections from learned topics to how decisions on climate change are made in the real world. One of the things Dr. Dan has been working on is a program to implement a Carbon Fee and Dividend to encourage private industries to make wise emissions choices.

In Honors Chemistry, Dr. Dan changed gears and provided evidence of climate change due to the acidification of our oceans. Students will continue to explore this topic with a personal inquiry in the chemistry of climate change as the students wind up the year.

5th/6th Grade Orchestra Brings Home the Gold!

This past Saturday, the 5th and 6th grade Orchestra was amazing as they played for the judges at the Trills & TrillsandThrills5WebThrills Music Festival at the Marietta Performing Arts Center at Marietta High School. According to Orchestra Director, Debbie Brink, “They worked so hard after coming back from spring term and spring break and invested much time and effort, staying after school for extra rehearsals these lasts 2 weeks as well as practicing at home! They totally owned their individual part and followed so well at the performance!” The judges rewarded that hard work and presented them with a Gold/Superior rating! Mrs. Brink shares these two verses about how God works in our efforts - Ecclesiastes 3:11a - "He has made everything beautiful in its time" and Psalm 66:2 - "Sing the glory of his name; make His praise glorious!" Academy Singers Work with Industry Professionals in Nashville

The Academy Singers recently traveled to Nashville in order to work with various industry professionals. Liz AcademyNashville3WebLongley, an award-winning singer and songwriter who has recorded multiple albums, toured extensively, and written songs for movies and television, performed a private concert and provided song-writing and performance advice for the group. Additionally, each one of the Academy singers received private instruction during a vocal masterclass with Chance Scoggins, a vocal and life coach involved in music writing, song-writing and music publishing. Chance is a well-known session singer, and known for his vocals on Beth Moore's worship team in years past, as well as producing the Women of Faith worship albums. Students also had a chance to learn from Maggie Adams, who is in music management with Olivia Management, representing Americana artists such as The Secret Sisters and Jill Andrews. In addition to working with these professionals, the group enjoyed dinner with several of our NCCS alumni, attending the Good Friday concert with Chris Tomlin, and touring Belmont University. This annual Academy trip to Nashville is a unique opportunity for the group to gain real-life knowledge and experience from those in the music industry and each year our students are inspired as they seek to advance their music skills.

Thanks to all the parents that volunteered as chaperones, making it possible for them to go on this amazing performance trip and congratulations to all the students in the 7th and 8th grade orchestra and band!

Academy Actors' Showcase: World Premiere

The NCCS Academy of the Arts is proud to present a unique opportunity for you to see a wonderful little piece of theatre written by our own director, Mr. Matthew Hendrix. The Actors' Showcase this year is entitled "Talking to Myself" and is an honest and unapologetic look at the struggles we face as we build relationships and make our lives together. The show follows Stephen as he navigates what will ultimately become the biggest and best decision he's ever made. Funny at times, pithy at others, but always resonant, come out and see a show that is sure to move you and remind you of the ones you love...and the ones you've lost.

Christmas in May in 4th Grade4thChristmasWeb

Fourth graders decided to turn lemons into lemonade after Field Day was postponed due to bad weather last week. They decided to celebrate Christmas in May, complete with santa hats, hot chocolate, snow, and popcorn! Christmas carols played in the background as students watched a crackling fire on the overhead projector. Math games were played with snowballs, artwork was completed with snow paint, and snowmen were built with actual "snow." Toes were warm and cozy with slipper socks and they enjoyed snuggling in their blankets. Such a fun way to make the best of the canceled Field Day!

First Grade Goes “Under the Sea”

First Grade classes visited the Georgia Aquarium this past week to learn more about fish and ocean life. Students were able to connect the information learned about fish in the classroom to observations and presentations at the aquarium. During the behind the scenes tour, students learned more about the needs of fish, classifying animals, and even got to watch the whale sharks during feeding time. It was a great way to see their learning come to life!

Second grader Kaylee Snow, shadowed Mrs. Titus as Lower School Principal of the Day on Thursday, May 4th. Kaylee and Mrs. Titus spent time making special treats for the teachers, visiting classrooms, talking with different offices, interacting with students and they enjoyed lunch from Chick-fil-A. One highlight of the day was a golf cart ride with Mr. Clingman and Mrs. Titus. Mr. Clingman showed Kaylee the new improvements on our campus. Interacting with the K3 students was Kaylee's favorite activity of the day. She thought they were adorable! This special opportunity to be Principal of the day was purchased through the NCCS Benefit Auction held in the spring.

Strings Workshop with a Juilliard School of OrchestraGuestWebMusic Graduate

Students thoroughly enjoyed guest performer and strings clinician Elizabeth Fayette, who played and spoke to the Upper School Concert Orchestra this past Thursday. Elizabeth is a violinist that is currently a faculty member and playing in a string quartet at Emory University. She is a recent graduate of the Juilliard School and the Curtis Institute of Music. She is also a Strings Clinician for the D'Addario String Company. After her introduction, Elizabeth proceeded to do what she does 6 to 8 hours each day - play the violin - and the orchestra students were in awe of her amazing talent (view short video clip here). After she played for them, she talked about the history of strings and the construction of strings from the 1600's until now. She shared some great points about the maintenance of a set of strings and how to make string choices based on instrument, sound preference and other factors. She concluded with a great time of Question & Answers. After Elizabeth left, students were excited to rehearse their pieces and Mrs. Brink thinks they have never sounded more beautiful! Mrs. Brink shared, “How cool is God - after class, I was excited to find out that two students had brought new sets of strings for a lesson on re-stringing their instrument! What a gift music is from our God!”

Special CDC Guest Visits Upper School ClassesScienceSpeaker1Web

The Anatomy and Introduction to Healthcare Science classes got a real treat last week with a special visitor from the CDC. Greg Burel, Director of the National Strategic Stockpile, spoke in both classes and gave students an overview of the items that the United States keeps in the stockpile and how the system is built for rapid response to keep our nation safe from a health crisis. He explained the constant monitoring of world events as the chain of events that led to the process of distribution (from the secret warehouses, strategically placed throughout the country) in the event of an outbreak or natural disaster. Mr. Burel also exposed students to another way to be involved in healthcare and medicine from a business perspective, outside of the traditional pathway of health careers. We so appreciate him taking time away from his usual schedule of White House briefings and Senate meetings to share with us. You can read more about his exciting job [HERE], in an article published by NPR last summer.

Environmental Science Class Visits Plant BowenScience1Web

Last Tuesday, the Environmental Science students got a unique experience when they made a trip up to Plant Bowen, a Georgia Power coal-fired plant in Euharlee, GA. They heard about the many considerations in producing power and its influence on the surrounding ecosystem. This nonrenewable resource impacts air quality, water, and waste in a way that really demonstrates the interconnectedness of all issues that they have covered this year, and gave the students an excellent semester review! The students agreed that it was time well spent to see Environmental Science in action outside of the classroom.

Sixth Grade Ensemble Performs at Senior OrchestraWEBCenter

May is Older Americans Month and this past Friday, May 12, the North Cobb Senior Center held a special event hosting about 60 senior saints for lunch and entertainment. It was a very special day for the 6th Grade String Ensemble as well - as they were the entertainment! The ten students practiced off and on for about 3 weeks to be ready to "give back" a little of what God has blessed them with musically. The audience absolutely loved the students and their music. (Click [HERE] for a short video of the ensemble at the center.) The precious conversations after the performance were just as special! It was an honor for our students to play for these saints and the students have already asked to plan more of these opportunities for orchestra next year - they love giving back by sharing their music!
(Ensemble members included Lindsay Nichols, Finley Ross, Bethany Akinola, Sophia Turnbough, Amelia Barr, Isabelle, Scriber, Ashley Guedes, Carolina Hubbs, Reagan Smith, Abbey Fortney, and guest cellist, Otha Turnbough from the US Concert Orchestra.)

Lauren Brown - NCCS Senior Spotlight

Lauren Brown - NCCS Senior Spotlight

In 2008, Lauren Brown transferred to North Cobb Christian School as a fourth grader. She describes it as the “best year ever” thanks to almost weekly field trips. A biblical education was a priority to Lauren’s parents, and God provided making it possible for her to complete her ninth year in May. “I know how important it was to my parents that I receive a biblical education, and I’m so thankful for their sacrifices,” she explains.

Although each year didn’t feature weekly trips, Lauren identified three of her favorite things for us:

1. Her Teachers
Lauren took full advantage of her teachers’ willingness to offer guidance outside the classroom. They pushed her to find her God-given calling and pursue it whole-heartedly.

“I look up to my teachers in so many different ways. I cannot count how many times I have busted through a teacher’s door during their planning period and asked them for advice. They always drop what they are doing and listen to me talk, sometimes for hours.”

2. Soccer
For thirteen years Lauren has enjoyed everything about soccer (except running.) Her time on NCCS’s soccer team has taught her valuable life lessons that she’ll carry with her after she graduates.

“I love trying new things,” she says. “It is definitely not easy balancing academics, sports, and LaurenBrownWebwork all at the same time, but knowing my priorities is most important. Soccer has given me leadership skills and taught me to step up for the team when needed,” she explains. “I have also learned how important it is to encourage one another; saying something so simple like ‘good game’ can really make a difference.”

3. Mission Trips
NCCS offers mission trips during the spring each year. Some service trips are international and some are local. One of the destinations this year for Spring Term was Haiti to travel to several villages and install water filters and tell them about the Gospel.

“The most memorable part of my time here was definitely the amazing opportunity I had to go to Haiti this year,” she says. “The trip wasn’t about how many water filters I was able to install, but how many Haitians were able to hear the Word of God. It was so humbling, and I would go back in a heartbeat!”

Memories Made
Her senior year has had so many incredible moments and she intends on making the most of the few days that are left. “I was so honored to be crowned Homecoming Queen this year; it all still feels like a dream!” she says.

And certainly she will miss her fellow students and teachers as she says goodbye to her high school years. “I know that I will look back on my senior year and miss every part of it, so I have tried to enjoy every last second!”

What’s Ahead
Lauren plans to go to the University of Georgia this fall to further her education, though deciding which university to attend certainly wasn’t an easy choice. “I plan on majoring in health promotion or pre-nursing because I would really love to be a nurse one day,” she says. “I also want to get involved in some type of Christian organization at Georgia and be able to minister and share my story with many students on campus.”

NCCS Junior Robert Howard Wins GHSA
State ChampionshipRobertHowardWeb

Huge congratulations to junior Robert Howard who was the Low Medalist at the 1A Private Golf State Championship, and is now the 2017 1A Private Golf Individual State Champion! Robert earned an individual spot to the State Championship after a strong performance at the Area Tournament, shooting an even par 72. Although the team did not qualify for the State Championship, Robert was able to qualify by being the lowest score outside of a qualifying team.

Robert competed in the state tournament against 80 golfers at Green Island Country Club in Columbus, GA. The tournament was supposed to be a 2-day 36- hole event. After day one, Robert was leading in first place after shooting a 68, which is 3 under par.
Robert was confident in his first day performance, “My stroke was pure, swing was pure, and I just started making some putts and stayed hot.” On the second day of the tournament the directors decided to cancel play due to the playability of the course and the upcoming forecast. With the 2nd day cancelled, Robert was able to hold his 1st place finish from Monday and be titled the 1A Private Golf Individual State Champion!

The elite caliber of Robert as a golfer is shown by the fact that in all of the GHSA State Championship Tournaments on Monday 9from Region 1A through 7A), there were 640 individual golfers - and Robert had the second lowest score out of every one of the 640 golfers that played in those tournaments! That is a very impressive accomplishment!

This is only the second GHSA sport Individual State Championship for NCCS, so Robert’s State Championship is a huge accomplishment! Way to go, Robert!

Famous Visitors “Come to Life” at the Wax Museum

Did you know that Jackie Robinson and Marie Antoinette recently visited North Cobb Christian School? Well, in a way. If you journeyed through the gymnasium on May 12th, you would have seen our fourth-graders transformed into famous figures from the past and present in a new and improved Wax Museum presentation that included technology. This event, which culminates a book report biography study, featured Pocahontas, Babe Ruth, Frederick Douglass, and Elvis — to name a few. More importantly, it showcased the impressive talents of our fourth-graders, who read a biography of someone’s life, wrote a summarization of the book, and recorded their presentation onto QR codes to pull off this event.

Many Lower School classes, scores of parents and relatives, faculty, and staff visited the museum, with their tech devices in hand and ear buds using a special guest wifi provided by our Technology Department to experience the museum first hand. They all agreed that the fourth-graders deserve a round of applause for their wonderful performances! Well done, fourth graders!

Sixth Grade World History Classes Create Coatofarms1Web
Coat of Arms

Sixth grade students recently completed a unit on Early, Medieval and Renaissance History with a project representing the Medieval time period. The project was based on a Medieval "Coat of Arms” as students learned the specificity of the knight's' shield and what each part of the coat of arms represented. To create their own coat of arms the students began with a list of character traits and adjectives that described their own personality. From this list, the students referred to information about the meaning behind the symbols and colors on the shield and they designed their own personal coat of arms based on this criteria. Their coat of arms "motto" was a favorite Bible verse they picked out themselves. The students started with a rough sketch/draft and then finalized their coat of arms on a larger piece of paper that was laminated. Students presented their project to the class and explained their "Coat of Arms" then took their projects home to their mothers as a "Mother's Day" gift! Mrs. Harris was extremely proud of the students’ hard work and great results!

5th Grade Orchestra Performance at Local Assisted Living Facility

Students found out what a pleasure it is to make music together and then share it with those who may not have a lot of music in their lives! Sixteen of our 5th grade orchestra students volunteered to stay after school, practice extra time, and give back some of what God has blessed them with in the gift of music. These students traveled to the Dogwood Forest Assisted Living Facility to play for the residents there. It was a great crowd - some clapping, most smiling, some directing, and a few had a catnap! but it was a beautiful experience! Music is powerful - it soothes the soul, it brings joy to the mind and body, it speaks life, and gives words when no words will come. These students enjoyed being a part of sharing the gift of music outside the walls of NCCS and are excited to do it again.
